Municipal Library Caja de Cultura in Torrelodones: Adaptive Reuse, Light, and Structural Clarity by Gabriel Gallegos Borges
A renovated cultural library blending structural clarity, natural light, and adaptive reuse, transforming a former commercial building into a vibrant community learning space.
The Municipal Library Caja de Cultura in Torrelodones, designed by Gabriel Gallegos Borges, stands as a benchmark in adaptive reuse and cultural infrastructure renovation in Spain. Originally conceived in 1994 by architect Fco. Javier Sáenz de Oíza as a commercial showroom with a residential annex, the 10,850 ft² building has been thoughtfully transformed into a vibrant public library that champions natural light, structural expression, and community engagement.

Completed in 2023, the project highlights the potential of existing architecture to serve new cultural functions through strategic spatial reconfiguration, structural enhancement, and refined material interventions.

Initial State and Architectural Legacy
The original building was a compact, rectangular volume clad in stoneware, distinguished by two truncated slate pyramids that crowned its roofscape. These geometric pavilions, topped with skylights, provided a unique architectural identity within the urban context of Torrelodones.
The internal layout was divided into two levels dedicated to furniture exhibition and sales, alongside a separate residential area accessed through an independent staircase. A semi-basement housed workshops and storage facilities. When its commercial life ended, the City Council acquired the structure with the vision of converting it into a community-centered cultural space.

Concept and Approach: Respecting Structure, Enhancing Use
The renovation strategy focused on three guiding goals:
- Revealing the original structural clarity
- Reorganizing space for flexibility and public function
- Introducing natural light to support reading, learning, and gathering
The design preserves the formal-structural essence of the existing architecture while enabling a contemporary spatial experience aligned with library use.

Opening Up the Space and Enhancing Light
A key intervention was the removal of internal partitions and outdated residential roof structures that obscured the reading of the original pavilions. This created an open, continuous spatial flow where the geometry and rhythm of the structural bays—three longitudinal and six transversal—are clearly perceived.
Natural light, initially limited due to dark interior finishes and minimal skylight penetration, was significantly improved through:
- New openings on the longitudinal façade facing the interior patio
- Motorized carpentry installed in skylights for improved ventilation and daylight control
- Light-toned surfaces that enhance luminosity and spatial comfort
These updates align the building’s atmosphere with its new purpose as a dynamic public reading and community space.

A New Circulation Spine: Staircase as Furniture
A striking feature of the renovation is the incorporation of a light steel-and-wood staircase that occupies the void between the two upper levels. More than a circulation element, it becomes a sculptural piece of integrated furniture.
Its linear, processional ascent reveals the full height and geometry of the interior, guiding users toward the skylit pavilions above.
System Integration and Functional Comfort
To ensure flexibility and maintain visual cleanliness, the HVAC system was carefully concealed within perimeter shelving and wall panels. This strategy preserves the library’s minimalist aesthetic while offering optimal thermal comfort for year-round public use.
Glazed Gallery as Transitional Space
Leveraging the existing exterior pergola supports, a new glazed gallery forms a buffer between the library and the outdoors. This transparent threshold acts as:
- A climate transition space
- A welcoming entrance hall
- A visual connector between interior and exterior environments
It enhances public access while reinforcing the building’s civic character.

Activation of Exterior Spaces
Outdoor areas have been revitalized to support community and educational programming:
- A pergola-covered expansion provides sheltered space for children’s activities, directly linked to the children’s library.
- A new English patio offers an independent access point to the semi-basement level, improving circulation and functionality.
- The urban perimeter has been redesigned to increase pedestrian surfaces, enhancing accessibility and the building’s presence in the neighborhood.
The Municipal Library Caja de Cultura in Torrelodones exemplifies how thoughtful renovation can elevate existing structures into contemporary cultural landmarks. Gabriel Gallegos Borges’ intervention carefully balances architectural preservation with modern functionality, prioritizing daylight, structural legibility, and community-oriented spaces. The result is a library that not only revitalizes a local icon but also enriches the civic life of Torrelodones.
