Naraç Church by Arkpro Studio: A Modern Architectural Marvel in Albania
Naraç Church by Arkpro Studio blends modern religious architecture with local materials, organic forms, and natural light, creating a spiritual landmark.
A Testament to Contemporary Religious Architecture
Naraç Church, designed by Arkpro Studio Albania, stands as a groundbreaking achievement in modern religious architecture. This remarkable Catholic church, located in the village of Naraç, Albania, is the first of its kind in the country, designed and constructed entirely by local architects, workers, and materials.

A Site Rooted in History
The church is strategically positioned near a river, where the landscape is rich with natural stone and concrete—materials deeply connected to the area's history. The village was originally situated along the riverbank until the communist era, when a dam was constructed, altering its course and reshaping the settlement. Today, Naraç Church symbolizes a revival of cultural and spiritual heritage, standing as a beacon of faith in the region.

The Vision Behind the Design
The lead architect, Alfons Shtjefni, hails from Naraç and has a strong Christian background. A graduate of the prestigious Mendrisio Academy of Architecture in Switzerland, he studied under the legendary Mario Botta and worked with Pritzker Prize laureate Peter Zumthor, shaping his unique design approach. With international competition wins and experience in Swiss architectural firms, he returned to his homeland to create something truly inspirational and enduring.

Embracing Organic Forms and Light
Unlike conventional church designs that emphasize sharp angles and rigid symmetry, Naraç Church embraces curved architecture to foster a sense of inclusivity. The smooth, flowing form ensures that no sharp edges disrupt the serene atmosphere, creating an inviting and harmonious space for worship.
Inside, the play of natural light is meticulously orchestrated. Carefully positioned openings allow sunlight to filter through, guiding visitors toward the altar and enhancing the spiritual experience. The sloped floor subtly lowers worshippers by 30 cm as they approach the altar, creating a profound feeling of humility and reverence.

A Landmark for the Community
The wooden ceiling, inspired by the purity of a lemon leaf, adds warmth to the space, reinforcing the connection to nature. The church has become the heart of the village, visible from surrounding communities and serving as a spiritual focal point within the Diocese of Sapa in northern Albania.
With its seamless integration of local materials, organic design, and spiritual symbolism, Naraç Church by Arkpro Studio is more than just a place of worship—it is a monument to faith, culture, and contemporary architecture in Albania.
