Nari – A Symbol of Empowerment Through Sustainable Architecture Design
Empowering women through sustainable architecture—celebrating achievements, fostering education, and providing a sanctuary for growth.
The "Nari" project by Maja Joniec, a winner entry for Nari, is a groundbreaking initiative that reflects the profound role of women in shaping India’s history and development. Designed as a free-standing pavilion located at the heart of New Delhi’s Connaught Place, this structure is a testament to the integration of sustainable architecture principles with cultural and social empowerment.

The project serves multiple purposes: a memorial, a gallery of achievements, an education center, and a sanctuary for women in need. It symbolizes resilience and transformation, merging traditional Indian aesthetics with environmentally conscious design.

Architectural Features Embracing Sustainability
- Eco-Friendly Materials: The building extensively uses bamboo, a renewable resource, as its core structural material. Bamboo is a sustainable choice, offering durability with a minimal carbon footprint.
- Rainwater Harvesting and Water Retention Systems: Equipped with systems that ensure water conservation, the design reduces dependency on municipal resources.
- Multifunctional Spaces: The pavilion features two levels:The first floor houses a large exhibition area, a water pool, and multifunctional spaces designed for community engagement. The second floor provides temporary accommodations, educational spaces, and gardens.

Cultural Integration in Design
The design incorporates traditional Indian motifs and patterns, symbolizing the strength and unity of women across the nation. A woven net structure overhead provides shade and artistic expression, resembling textiles created by women artisans.

Empowering Women Through Architecture
The Nari project is not just a building but a social statement. It aims to raise awareness about gender inequalities and inspire change by celebrating women’s achievements. Its open-plan spaces foster dialogue, education, and interaction, making it a living monument of progress.
