Narratives of Indus Valley Civilisation is a museum architecture project that transforms archaeological memory into an accessible civic experience. Designed as a public institution, the project brings together a resource centre, museum, kids learning area, and interpretation centre to narrate the story of one of the world’s oldest urban civilisations.
The proposal begins with a critical concern: the Indus Valley Civilisation is widely recognised for its town planning, trade systems, craft culture, drainage networks, and large-scale excavations at sites such as Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. Yet much of its story remains fragmented, inaccessible, or poorly understood by the general public. Many sites are located in remote areas, many excavated objects are preserved under restricted conditions, and several smaller archaeological digs remain buried again after documentation. This creates a gap between historic knowledge and public awareness.
Swapnil Magar’s project responds to this gap by designing architecture as a narrative medium. Rather than presenting history as a static display, the proposal turns the built environment into a spatial storyline. The building becomes a walkable interpretation of ruins, streets, courtyards, stupa-like forms, brick surfaces, public gardens, and educational sequences.


A Public Institution for Heritage, Education, and Interpretation
The program is structured as a layered public institution. It includes research and dissemination spaces, education and outreach areas, administration and management, visitor services and amenities, interpretation and presentation galleries, and preservation and conservation zones.
This approach expands the idea of museum architecture beyond exhibition halls. The project is not only a container for artefacts. It becomes a place for learning, storytelling, public participation, and cultural dialogue. The kids learning area introduces younger visitors to the civilisation through spatial experience, while the resource centre supports deeper study and research.
The interpretation centre acts as the intellectual and emotional core of the design. It translates archaeological evidence into accessible narratives, helping visitors understand how the Indus Valley Civilisation lived, worked, traded, built, and organised its settlements.
Making an Ancient Civilisation Accessible to All
The thesis behind the project is to weave together a major historic event by recreating elements from the past and fashioning them into an architectural narrative. The project acknowledges that the story of the Indus Valley is often difficult to access because of fragmented knowledge, restricted archaeological sites, and the political separation of major heritage locations across present-day India and Pakistan.
By placing the narrative within a public institution, the design proposes architecture as a shared cultural bridge. It uses the Indus Valley Civilisation not only as a historical subject but also as a point of solidarity between India and Pakistan. The project becomes a space where a shared past can be experienced through learning, movement, and memory.
Site Selection: Vadodara as a Civic and Cultural Anchor
The site selection strategy considers major Indus Valley sites such as Lothal and Dholavira, which are important archaeological locations in Gujarat. However, the project chooses Vadodara because of its stronger public accessibility, institutional presence, cultural identity, and connectivity to major cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat, and Mumbai.
The selected site is located near a public garden in Vadodara, allowing the museum to inherit a sense of openness, civic ownership, and collective gathering. The project uses this green setting as a foreground for public memory. The garden becomes more than an open space. It becomes an extension of the museum’s learning environment.
The design positions the building as a threshold between today’s Vadodara and the memory of the Indus Valley Civilisation. It creates a dialogue between contemporary urban life and ancient archaeological imagination.
Spatial Qualities Inspired by Indus Valley Sites
The project studies the spatial character of Indus Valley sites and translates these qualities into architectural form. Narrow streets, brick walls, broken edges, ruins, cut volumes, stepped surfaces, and courtyards become key design references.
The mapping of spatial qualities identifies several recurring experiences. The narrow brick-lined streets evoke the movement through archaeological remains. The fragmented ruins provoke curiosity and invite interpretation. The idea of a “world within a world” emerges through courtyards, enclosed pockets, and internalized open spaces. These courtyards are not only formal devices but also environmental strategies, allowing light and ventilation to enter the building.
The project also references the stupa-like form at Mohenjo-Daro. This becomes a symbolic architectural feature through stepped massing and domed elements. The entry gate, inspired by historic gateways, is interpreted as a threshold into the civilisation’s narrative world. The building uses open, semi-open, and closed spaces to recreate the changing atmosphere of excavation, discovery, and interpretation.


Form Development: From Grid to Narrative
The form development begins with a base volume shaped around courtyards and grids. These courtyards support natural ventilation and establish an internal spatial rhythm. The first-floor level introduces administration and kids learning spaces, while stepped floor plates evoke the layered form of archaeological mounds and the stupa at Mohenjo-Daro.
The museum zones are developed along a central axis. Visitors are guided through a sequence of spatial narratives, but the design also allows them to choose their own interpretive path. This creates a balance between directed storytelling and personal discovery.
Different zones are then assigned distinct identities. Museum spaces are marked through strong volumes, replica areas introduce immersive display conditions, interpretation zones become spaces of explanation, and yellow connection spaces tie the experience together. Additional floors are added to museum areas to create a layered narrative. A central ramp connects the building and becomes a major experiential device, bringing movement, pause, and visual continuity into the project.
Ruins as Architectural Memory
One of the strongest aspects of the project is its use of ruins as an architectural language. Instead of treating ruins only as remnants of loss, the design gives them active spatial power. Broken walls, brick surfaces, incomplete forms, and fragmented masses become part of the visitor’s journey.
The unbuilt ruin placed around the museum creates a symbolic connection between the two primary buildings. It frames movement, generates curiosity, and reinforces the relationship between archaeology and architecture. This strategy allows the building to express incompleteness without appearing unfinished. The ruin becomes a deliberate narrative device.
In museum architecture, this is an important move. The design does not simply display history. It makes the visitor feel the tension between what is known, what is lost, and what can still be imagined.
A Dialogue Between Vadodara and the Indus Valley
Vadodara has its own architectural identity, shaped by historic connections, Indo-Saracenic elements, cultural institutions, and civic landmarks. The project recognises this identity and introduces a conflict: how can a public building in Vadodara speak about the Indus Valley Civilisation without ignoring the city’s existing architectural language?
The response is an architectural amalgamation. The design brings together the material and spatial cues of Indus Valley settlements with the civic character of Vadodara. Brick becomes a major visual language. Courtyards, stepped masses, domes, gateways, and shaded passages connect the ancient reference with the city’s contemporary public life.
The public garden plays an important role in this dialogue. It acts as an accessible civic foreground where people can gather, pause, and transition into the museum experience. The building therefore becomes part of the city’s memory, not an isolated object.
Site Development: Green Fabric, Entries, and Breathing Nodes
The site development treats the landscape as a green fabric. The building is placed against this green background, allowing the public garden and built form to complement each other. A clear site strategy separates service movement, visitor movement, vehicular access, and pedestrian entry.
The main pedestrian entry is aligned with the avenue, turning arrival into a ceremonial experience. Roads and pathways are developed along primary axes, while alternate breathing nodes are introduced as pause points. These nodes appear as informal and formal greens, giving visitors places to stop between learning, recreation, and exhibition.
This careful organisation strengthens the project’s public character. It makes the museum approachable, legible, and civic in scale.
Museum Experience and Visitor Journey
The visitor experience begins with an introduction to world civilisations. The project compares the Indus Valley with Egyptian, Mayan, and Mesopotamian civilisations, using familiar architectural symbols such as pyramids and ziggurats to establish a broader historical frame.
From there, the narrative moves into the Indus Valley Civilisation. Visitors encounter topography, river systems, settlement patterns, artefacts, urban planning principles, trade references, craft culture, and social life. The story unfolds through galleries, corridors, ramps, replicas, courtyard views, and immersive installations.
The design uses light as an interpretive tool. Open spaces, semi-open transitions, and darker enclosed galleries help create different emotional conditions. This use of light and shadow gives the museum architecture a sense of depth, rhythm, and discovery.
Architectural Features and Material Expression
The building’s visual language is rooted in brick, stepped forms, courtyards, and large volumes. The domes with stepped bases are inspired by the stupa at Mohenjo-Daro. Different brick patterns and jalis add texture, porosity, and regional expression.
The stairways and first-floor volumes create a strong entry moment. Boxed projections help control heat gain and balance the horizontal massing of the building. A large public garden at the right acts as a careful visual and environmental counterpoint to the built mass.
The central tower rises as a dominant element, giving the building a recognizable silhouette. The tower references the layered historic character of Gujarat while also acting as a vertical marker within the museum complex.
Education Through Space
Because this project was recognised as a People’s Choice Award entry of Education '20, its educational value is central. The museum does not rely only on text, diagrams, or artefact displays. It teaches through spatial sequencing.
Children can learn through movement, interactive areas, models, and narrative environments. Researchers and students can engage through resource facilities and interpretation spaces. General visitors can understand the civilisation through accessible storytelling and immersive architectural cues.
This layered educational approach makes the project relevant to multiple audiences. It supports formal learning, informal learning, and experiential learning within one public institution.
