Nice Rice Shanghai Flagship Store by Say Architects: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Nice Rice Shanghai Flagship Store blends traditional Chinese architecture with modern minimalism, creating a cultural, social, and retail hub.
The Nice Rice Shanghai Flagship Store, designed by Say Architects, redefines contemporary retail spaces by seamlessly blending traditional Chinese architecture with modern minimalist aesthetics. As the brand’s first national flagship, this 300m² retail space on Huaihai Road (M.), a historical intersection of Eastern and Western cultures, embodies a harmonious fusion of heritage and innovation.

Reinterpreting the Traditional Chinese Roof
In Chinese architecture, the roof—often referred to as the "fifth elevation"—holds deep cultural significance. Say Architects extend this traditional sloped roof design into the store’s interior, transforming it into an inviting sanctuary. Inspired by the Oriental Rice Warehouse, historically used for storing rice, the space symbolizes inclusivity, generosity, and cultural exchange.

Architectural Design: Harmony & Balance
The façade features mirrored double-sloped eaves, creating a visually balanced and symmetrical structure. The storefront’s recessed design introduces an interactive public space, bridging the gap between fashion retail and street culture. The entrance, marked by original stone steps, enhances the ceremonial experience of stepping into this modern rice warehouse, setting a new benchmark for immersive retail experiences.

Materiality & Artistic Collaboration
The interior adopts clearwater concrete as its primary material, reinforcing a raw yet refined aesthetic. Say Architects integrate elements of Chinese intangible cultural heritage, collaborating with a lacquer artist to craft "One", a striking eggshell-based artwork. This intricate piece embodies the contrast of simplicity and texture, offering a contemporary take on traditional craftsmanship.

Blending Culture, Coffee, and Fashion
This flagship store transcends conventional retail, combining fashion with coffee culture in a dynamic dual-business model. The architectural design encourages an open social atmosphere, appealing to Shanghai’s younger generation. Beneath the extended eaves, the space fosters a cultural dialogue between past and present, seamlessly integrating heritage with modern consumer experiences.

A New Vision for Modern Retail Spaces
The Nice Rice Shanghai Flagship Store exemplifies how architecture can reinterpret tradition in a contemporary context. By merging minimalist design with cultural storytelling, Say Architects create an urban sanctuary where heritage and modernity coexist. This innovative approach positions the flagship store as a landmark for Shanghai’s evolving retail landscape.
