NORA Hair Salon Ginza by U by Kenta Nagai Studio
NORA Hair Salon Ginza/U by Kenta Nagai Studio blends natural light, greenery, and urban elegance to create immersive wellness-focused interiors.
Located in the heart of Tokyo’s upscale Ginza district, the NORA Hair Salon Ginza/U by Kenta Nagai Studio redefines the traditional beauty salon experience with an innovative blend of natural light, greenery, and urban sophistication. Spanning 140 m² on the 9th floor of a tenant building, the salon transforms its elevated location into a serene and immersive interior environment designed to enrich both beauty and wellness.

Concept and Design Approach
NORA operates 13 salons across Japan and abroad, with this project marking the second branch in Ginza. The design concept was centered on harnessing the sweeping natural light from the large windows and creating a green-filled interior landscape that evolves into different zones of experience: cutting area, entrance, nail/eyelash treatment zone, and shampoo area.
The architects sought to balance the vibrancy of natural light with moments of intimate calmness, ensuring every guest experiences a journey through contrasting atmospheres—from liberating brightness to cave-like retreat.

Spatial Composition
- Cutting Area Positioned along the expansive window, the cutting space enjoys a bright, open, and liberating atmosphere. Earth-toned finishes and warm lighting temper the natural brightness, creating a sense of calm. Rhythmic glass partitions enhance the perception of light, framing a visually dynamic space that merges nature with urban sophistication.
- Entrance & Treatment Zones At the center lies the terracotta-hued entrance, inspired by rock formations, where nail and eyelash treatments are offered. This design intentionally contrasts with the openness of the cutting space, instead evoking a cave-like cocoon that feels private, intimate, and restorative.
- Shampoo Area Tucked deeper into the layout, the shampoo space furthers the sense of retreat, enhancing the feeling of relaxation and holistic wellness.

Materiality and Atmosphere
The salon’s color and material palette reinforces its conceptual contrasts. Earth colors ground the cutting space, while terracotta tones highlight the central core. A flowing curtain installation encloses and unifies the spaces, introducing a soft, organic quality that complements the sharper lines of aluminum framing, subtly referencing Ginza’s urban elegance.

Meaning of “U”
The “U” in NORA Ginza/U stands for “Upper floor in the Upper city, Updating U (you)”—a concept that embodies transformation, elevation, and the enrichment of beauty experiences. Each spatial transition is designed to redefine the visitor’s perception of self-care within a uniquely designed environment.

A Salon Beyond Beauty
More than just a place for haircuts, the NORA Ginza/U salon is a wellness-oriented interior design project that merges architecture, materiality, and light to provide a multi-sensory journey. It reflects a forward-thinking approach to beauty salons in Tokyo, blending contemporary urban identity with restorative natural elements.
