North Freo House by Robeson Architects
A warm, light-filled preschool designed with playful spatial sequences, natural materials, and flexible learning zones that nurture creativity, community, and early childhood development.
Located in the sought-after coastal enclave of North Fremantle, Australia, North Freo House by Robeson Architects is a thoughtful and sophisticated expansion of an existing heritage home. Completed in 2025 and spanning 313 m², the project responds to the clients’ desire to remain in their cherished neighbourhood while enhancing the home for modern family living. The result is a sensitive yet bold architectural intervention that ba lances heritage constraints, Mediterranean influences, and contemporary spatial expression.

Context: Heritage Constraints & a Desire to Stay
The clients chose to stay rooted in this tightly held residential pocket, opting for a strategic renovation rather than relocating. This decision introduced a complex design challenge:
- Strict heritage controls governing the site
- A need to protect original character while introducing new spaces
- A tight budget that required precision in what was updated and what was preserved

Robeson Architects approached the brief by prioritizing smart construction strategies, minimizing structural intervention, and ensuring every upgrade brought meaningful value.

Key Program Requirements
The clients requested:
- A new master bedroom suite
- A flexible study or second living space
- Brighter, more generous living areas
- Better outdoor connection and improved flow
The architects translated the clients’ Mediterranean sensibility—relaxed, warm, tactile living—into a design that respects the home’s original heritage architecture while elevating it for contemporary use.

Upper-Level Addition: Efficient, Sensitive, Cost-Smart
The new upper-floor addition is placed directly atop the existing walls, an intentionally economical move that:
- Minimizes demolition
- Preserves structural integrity
- Reduces construction costs
- Allows investment to be directed into high-impact areas

Spaces that were still functioning well—like the laundry and bathroom—were purposely left untouched, ensuring efficiency and resourcefulness.
Ground Floor: Light, Drama & Outdoor Living
While the building footprint remains unchanged, the spatial quality of the ground floor is radically transformed:

Double-Height Void
A dramatic double-height void floods the home with daylight, countering the previously dark interior and establishing a sense of volume at the home's core. This new vertical space becomes the emotional heart of the home.

Indoor–Outdoor Connection
Marvel Tile & Stone’s seamless stone paving runs from the interior to the exterior, dissolving the threshold and creating a continuous, expansive outdoor room. The ensuite above extends outward to form a sheltered outdoor dining area, enhancing usability year-round and strengthening the connection to the pool and courtyard.

Mediterranean Warmth in a Heritage Setting
Warm timbers, textured materials, and lush tonal variations quietly reference the clients' Mediterranean aesthetic, bringing softness and lived-in comfort to the renovated interiors.

Materiality & Craftsmanship
The home blends:
- Concrete and stone for durability and thermal mass
- Timber accents for warmth and tactility
- Clean lines and natural textures inspired by coastal and Mediterranean living
- Stonework craftsmanship that elevates simple geometry into refined details
The interior palette is intentionally restrained, allowing light, form, and materiality to define the atmosphere.

A Contemporary Coastal Home Anchored in Heritage
North Freo House represents a masterclass in strategic renovation. Robeson Architects deliver a home that:
- Honors heritage controls
- Expands without overwhelming
- Infuses Mediterranean-style relaxation
- Maximizes light and space
- Creates seamless indoor–outdoor living

It is both a respectful continuation of the site’s architectural history and a bold step toward modern coastal living.
