Ophelia Apartments by Arkham Projects is a nature-integrated residential development in Tulum, Mexico, designed as a sanctuary that harmonizes contemporary architecture with the richness of the surrounding jungle. Completed in 2022 and spanning over 12,815 square meters, the project by lead architects Benjamín Peniche Calafell and Jorge Duarte Torre redefines sustainable living by blurring the boundary between built space and the natural environment.

A Sanctuary Where Architecture and Nature Coexist

Ophelia was conceived as a retreat where residents experience a profound connection with nature. Every path, courtyard, and dwelling is shaped around existing trees, ensuring that the native jungle remains the central protagonist. This approach transforms the development into a living ecosystem—one that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit.

Guided by the desire to coexist with the environment, the design employs local materials, organic textures, and layouts that minimize ecological impact. The project encourages an immersive lifestyle that celebrates natural ventilation, filtered light, and uninterrupted views of lush greenery.

Design Strategy Rooted in Ecological Respect

A detailed analysis of the most significant trees on the site determined the placement of each structure. Instead of imposing a rigid master plan, the architects designed the buildings around preserved vegetation, creating a series of low-density villas nestled within the jungle.

These villas consist of compact apartments arranged in two-level clusters and connected by meandering paths. Each pathway respects existing roots and canopies, enhancing the sensation of wandering through a natural forest. Central to the development stands a multi-level amenity area, wrapped in a handcrafted bajareque skin that delivers an authentic, earthy atmosphere.

A Jungle Pool That Preserves Existing Trees

One of Ophelia’s signature elements is its organically shaped pool, designed around protected trees to form natural islets within the water. The pool embodies the project’s ecological philosophy—embracing nature rather than replacing it. With multiple levels and soft night illumination, it becomes a serene gathering space that reflects the spirit of Tulum’s landscape.

At the higher end of the site, a slightly denser residential building sits elevated and separated to introduce a green circulation axis. This opening allows air to flow freely and maintains visual continuity with the forest. All apartment pathways are enveloped by vegetation, ensuring privacy, tranquility, and uninterrupted views of green spaces from every room.

Invisible Architecture Emerging from the Jungle

Ophelia is designed to appear as though it is part of the forest itself. Vegetation surrounds the development so intensely that architectural elements only peek through the foliage. Parking is positioned at the perimeter to minimize land disturbance and support pedestrian access through various leafy entrances.

The project is organized into three main components: – A central amenity hub featuring the jungle pool and community spaces – Scattered villa clusters embedded within the natural terrain – An apartment block strategically divided to maintain a landscaped green axis

This trio of elements weaves together indoor and outdoor living, crafting a seamless experience where nature defines every spatial interaction.

A New Model of Sustainable Residential Living in Tulum

More than a residential project, Ophelia Apartments embodies a regenerative design philosophy that prioritizes nature as both context and collaborator. The development offers a lifestyle that combines sustainability, wellness, and contemporary comfort—making it a model for eco-conscious architecture in Tulum.
