Parting in Matter, Reunion in Spirit
Honoring memories through architecture that unites nature, spirit, and design—creating spaces where farewell becomes eternal connection.
In the realm of memorial architecture, design transcends the tangible, embodying both loss and eternal remembrance. This project " Parting in Matter, Reunion in Spirit" explores an innovative approach to commemorating life, seamlessly integrating nature, water, and architecture to create a sanctuary of reflection.

A Fluid Journey Through Remembrance
Visitors bid farewell to their loved ones as ashes merge into a clear spring, symbolizing the passage of time and the cyclical nature of existence. As the water flows into a cascading waterfall and nourishes the surrounding garden, memories are illuminated through projections, forming an ethereal connection between the past and the present.
This unique approach transforms the concept of a traditional cemetery into an experiential space where elements of nature play a key role in mourning and remembrance. The material journey follows the stream back to the earth, while the spirit lingers in the sanctuary, offering solace to those who visit.

Architectural Vision: A Sacred Space of Reflection
Designed by Mingjie Guo, Mou Ziyong, and 刘 丛, the project redefines the architecture of remembrance by integrating structural symbolism with emotional resonance. The circular form of the memorial embodies the endless cycle of life, uniting water, light, and human presence in an immersive experience.
The design received an Honorable Mention in the prestigious Circle of Life competition, recognizing its innovative take on how architecture can evoke deep emotional connections while addressing the spiritual needs of modern society.
A Harmonious Balance Between Material and Spirit
Unlike conventional cemeteries, this memorial structure prioritizes a holistic approach to parting and reunion. The purity of water, the symbolism of flowing currents, and the integration of nature and light redefine how we perceive loss and commemoration.
By embracing memorial architecture as a medium for healing, this project offers a transformative experience—where parting is no longer just an end but a seamless transition into an everlasting connection.
