The Patios House by Studio MK27, located in Mangaratiba, Brazil, is a masterclass in quiet luxury and tropical modernism. Conceived by architect Marcio Kogan, the 600 m² residence disappears into the landscape, creating a seamless connection between architecture, sea, and mountain. From the water, the home appears almost invisible, hidden beneath a thin concrete slab that delicately separates lush greenery from the sandy shoreline.

A House That Dissolves Into the Landscape

The design takes full advantage of its elongated oceanfront plot. Two wide, low-lying volumes anchor the home, positioned around a generous central patio filled with lush vegetation. This “green courtyard” acts as the heart of the project, mediating light, shade, and airflow throughout the interiors.

The front volume opens entirely to the horizon. Full-height sliding frames transform the living room into a breezy extension of the outdoors, integrating the pool terrace, garden, and inner patio into a single barefoot-friendly living environment. The kitchen and TV room are enclosed in a warm eucalyptus-clad box that softens the architectural lines.

Private Suites With Their Own Patios

At the rear, another volume wrapped in eucalyptus shutters houses five intimate suites, each featuring a private patio. These outdoor extensions bring filtered natural light and constant cross-ventilation into every bathroom, reinforcing Studio MK27’s philosophy of sensory comfort and understated elegance.

Materiality Rooted in Nature

While the architecture favors clean and minimal lines, its material palette celebrates imperfection and tactility. Key elements include:

  • Eucalyptus shutters that modulate light and privacy
  • Raw brick walls framing the sides of the house
  • Exposed aggregate concrete floors adding texture and durability

This combination of rustic and refined materials creates a warm, natural atmosphere that complements the coastal surroundings.

Furniture That Balances Warmth and Precision

The interior design continues this dialogue between softness and sharpness. Studio MK27 curated pieces that blend:

  • natural textures
  • organic shapes
  • minimalistic modernist silhouettes
  • warm, tactile finishes

This results in a sophisticated yet relaxed environment, a tropical reinterpretation of modernist living.

A Sensory Coastal Experience

Patios House is more than a beachfront home; it is an immersive sensory experience. The architecture blends effortlessly with the sea breeze, the scent of the garden’s soil, and the changing light of the coastline. Grounded yet open to the horizon, the house embodies Studio MK27’s commitment to calm atmospheres, subtle beauty, and harmonious integration with nature.
