Blending Tradition with Contemporary Design

Located in the charming coastal town of Pāvilosta, Latvia, the Pāvilosta Residence, designed by OAD – Open Architecture Design, is a stunning example of modern coastal architecture. Inspired by the region’s rich history and vibrant wooden homes, the residence seamlessly integrates traditional aesthetics with contemporary design, creating a timeless yet innovative structure.

Architectural Concept: Inspired by the Baltic Coast

The 276 m² residence, completed in 2023, is strategically designed to capture the essence of the Baltic Sea. With its dual-sloped roof and wooden façade, the home reflects Pāvilosta’s vernacular architecture, while large floor-to-ceiling windows invite sweeping views of the coastline. The layout fosters a deep connection with nature, ensuring that natural light, sea breezes, and panoramic views define the living experience.

Sustainable and Minimalist Interiors

Inside, the residence embraces minimalism, using natural materials such as wood, veneer, concrete, and metal. The color palette, inspired by Pāvilosta’s signature marine blue, pays homage to the town’s once-vibrant facades. Every design element, from plywood surfaces to custom furniture, enhances the home’s simplicity and functionality.

The kitchen merges aesthetic appeal with efficiency, while the attic-level guest rooms provide a flexible living space. A recirculation system underscores the project’s commitment to sustainability, ensuring energy efficiency without compromising comfort.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection

One of the most striking features of the residence is its glass-walled sauna, designed to blur the lines between interior and nature. Facing the untamed Baltic shoreline, this space offers a tranquil yet immersive retreat. The home’s glass veranda, which links the main structure to an auxiliary unit, serves as a relaxation hub with a dual-sided fireplace, enhancing warmth and ambiance.

A Testament to Contextual Architecture

From its coastal-inspired materials to its climate-responsive design, the Pāvilosta Residence exemplifies OAD’s philosophy of site-sensitive architecture. This project is more than just a home—it’s an architectural narrative that celebrates its surroundings, bridging heritage, sustainability, and modernity in perfect harmony.
