The Pixel Residential Complex, designed by renowned architecture firm MVRDV, is an 85,000-square-metre mixed-use development located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Completed in 2024, this groundbreaking project redefines residential living in the Emirates, offering a vibrant combination of apartments, commercial spaces, and communal amenities. The development is the first to be completed in Makers District on Reem Island, envisioned as the new creative heart of Abu Dhabi alongside the cultural hub of Saadiyat Island.

A Vision for Community-Centric Urban Living

At the core of Pixel’s design is a central communal plaza, which serves as the social and cultural heart of the development. The seven compact towers of the complex “break down” into formations of terraces and bay windows, designed with shading screens of tiles in 14 subtle pastel colors inspired by the iridescence of pearls. This unique approach encourages residents to engage with the outdoors, fostering a strong sense of community and connectivity within the urban environment.

The towers are strategically positioned at the site’s edges, optimizing natural ventilation, shade, and cooling breezes. They also frame views of the surrounding waterfront and beach, creating seamless indoor-outdoor connections. The central plaza is designed to host an array of active uses, including restaurants, cafés, retail outlets, a gym, a medical clinic, an early learning center, and offices for startups, ensuring vibrancy throughout the day.

Architectural Expression: “Oyster and Pearl” Concept

Pixel’s identity is strengthened through its innovative façades and materiality. Inspired by Abu Dhabi’s heritage, the development embodies the metaphor of an oyster, with a strong outer shell of concrete panels protecting a delicate “pearl” at its center. The concrete panels are imprinted with a graphic pattern by artist Nicole Martens, reminiscent of oyster shells, while the shading screens in the central plaza provide the impression of a glowing pearl within.

Terraces and bay windows extend the living spaces into the plaza, creating a blurring of private and public realms. Water features and greenery in the plaza enhance the microclimate, providing comfort in outdoor spaces, while planned green roofs atop the pixel formations contribute to environmental sustainability. Each tower is also uniquely colored internally, enhancing wayfinding and providing distinct identities for residents.

Diverse Residential Typologies and Social Integration

The complex houses 525 apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom units, with a thoughtful mix of affordable and premium units. By positioning these apartments around a lively pedestrian plaza, Pixel ensures that lower-level residences enjoy the same appeal as upper floors. This arrangement fosters social interaction across demographics, including locals, expats, families, singles, and elderly residents, creating a truly integrated community.

Jacob van Rijs, founding partner of MVRDV, emphasizes the project’s innovative approach: “Pixel challenges conventional residential typologies in the UAE. Instead of isolated towers, it encourages outdoor interaction, neighborly connections, and a socially and environmentally sustainable way of life.”

Collaborative Design and Urban Impact

The project brought together an international team of collaborators, including RNL for masterplanning, Parsons for infrastructure, Bjarke Ingels Group for landscape and public realm, Verdaus as landscape architects, Delta Lighting Design, and Cooper Wilcock for vertical transportation. Pixel has quickly established itself as a landmark in Makers District, providing a model for sustainable, community-driven urban living in Abu Dhabi and the broader Middle East.
