Public Library in Baião by Traço Alternativo Arquitectos Associados
Historic school transformed into a light-filled public library, blending heritage and modern design to foster learning, culture, and community engagement.
A Thoughtful Urban Insertion Rooted in History
The new Public Library in Baião, designed by Traço Alternativo Arquitectos Associados, stands as a respectful tribute to both the town’s architectural heritage and its cultural aspirations. Located on a sloping site along Avenida 25 de Abril in northern Portugal, the project reclaims and reinterprets a historic primary school building, originally constructed during the Estado Novo regime in the 1940s.
This earlier structure, cherished by generations of locals, formed the conceptual and physical anchor for the intervention. The architectural team, led by Nuno Campos and Pedro Cardoso, envisioned a design strategy that honored memory while embracing new possibilities for civic engagement and public knowledge.

Integration of Old and New: Architecture as Continuum
Rather than demolishing the existing school, the architects opted for a sensitive rehabilitation. The preserved structure is now seamlessly paired with a contemporary three-story volume, resulting in a unified and functional whole. This spatial integration was achieved by aligning materials and forms across both eras, allowing for a subtle yet meaningful architectural dialogue.
Externally, the design emphasizes continuity through materiality, with a shared palette and detailing that reinforces cohesion. Internally, clear circulation paths and well-lit environments offer intuitive access between the refurbished and newly built areas.

Spatial Strategy: Light, Accessibility, and Civic Versatility
The project capitalizes on the site's north-facing orientation, incorporating wide glazed openings that flood reading areas with natural light, creating optimal conditions for study and contemplation. The symbolic decision to retain the original school entrance as the library's main access point reinforces the site's narrative continuity—welcoming future generations through the same threshold used by past students.
A secondary, more inclusive access point—a covered side ramp—ensures universal accessibility and leads to a secondary atrium. This multifunctional space doubles as an exhibition hall and a foyer for events held in the auditorium and training rooms, allowing the library to function beyond typical operating hours and support community-based cultural programming.

Programmatic Organization: A Place for All
The library’s interior layout is thoughtfully zoned across three levels. The upper floor houses the adult reading and research areas, offering panoramic views of the region’s mountainous silhouette—an inspiring scene reminiscent of Eça de Queiroz’s novel The City and the Mountains, which captures the poetic grandeur of this landscape.
Descending to the lower level reveals the children’s library, which connects directly to an outdoor garden space, encouraging interaction between interior and exterior learning environments. This level also accommodates archival storage and staff support areas.

Architecture That Reflects Its Community
Reflecting the openness and hospitality of Baião’s residents, the building’s design embraces transparency and light. The generous use of glass promotes visual connection with the surroundings while reinforcing the building’s civic character. The result is a library as cultural infrastructure—a gathering place for education, imagination, and dialogue.

A Model for Adaptive Cultural Architecture
The Public Library in Baião is more than a place to read—it is a space of memory, inclusion, and transformation. Traço Alternativo Arquitectos Associados have skillfully combined architectural preservation with contemporary civic values, delivering a building that is simultaneously rooted in history and future-oriented. The project stands as a benchmark for how small towns can revitalize historic structures to meet evolving public needs.
