Transforming Education Through Architecture

The Rahmah Library, located at Rahmaniyeh Primary School in Cape Town's historic District Six, represents a bold step in educational architecture. Designed by The MAAK, this vibrant facility redefines how libraries for schools can be engaging, collaborative, and contextually meaningful. By integrating a user-centered design approach, architects and students co-created a space tailored to inspire reading, learning, and imagination.

Design Concept: Form Meets Function

The library is characterized by a simple mono-pitched roof, oriented to frame dramatic mountain views to the south while providing essential shading from the northern sun. A curving glass block wall beneath the triangular eastern elevation creates a welcoming entrance and covered play area, merging aesthetics with functionality.

Externally, the building’s brick façade features varied bonds, textures, and colors, echoing the materiality of the original school building, the oldest remaining in District Six. These subtle references root the library in its historic context while projecting a contemporary identity.

Interior Layout: Spaces for Every Learner

Inside, the Rahmah Library unfolds as a single, generous volume. Service areas are discreetly tucked away, allowing uninterrupted flow throughout the facility. Thoughtful level changes, inspired by the site's slope, delineate key zones:

  • Reception area for welcoming students and visitors
  • Sunken reading pit for immersive literary experiences
  • Central library core stocked with books and resources
  • Classroom area for workshops and group learning
  • Conversation lounge for collaborative study or quiet discussion

Playful architectural details encourage varied postures of reading, from lounging to sitting alone or in groups, fostering an environment that supports both focus and creativity.

Co-Creation with Learners

Central to the Rahmah Library’s design is active participation from its users. Working alongside child-centered designer Xanelé Mennen from the Otto Foundation, The MAAK organized workshops where learners contributed ideas, generating insights that informed key design decisions.

A highlight of this collaboration is the ‘Rahmah-Rama’ bookshelves, conceptualized by the students and realized by local furniture designers Pedersen and Lennard. These co-designed elements instill a sense of ownership and connection among the students, creating a library that feels personal and alive.

Honouring District Six History

District Six carries a complex socio-political history, shaped by Apartheid-era forced removals. To commemorate this past, The MAAK collaborated with artist and land researcher Zayaan Khan to transform local clay, sometimes mixed with rubble from demolished homes, into decorative door pushplates, tiles, and custom 'District Six Bricks'.

These bricks are embedded in the entrance lobby and exterior drinking fountain, grounding the library physically and symbolically in its community. This thoughtful integration of hyper-contextual materials ensures the library serves as both a functional educational facility and a tribute to local heritage.

A Sanctuary for Learning and Imagination

The Rahmah Library, proudly opened in 2025, provides a dedicated space for over 500 students who previously lacked a library. It has become a beacon of literacy, creativity, and joy, offering a “home away from home,” as Principal Mrs. Shireen Jaffer describes it.

By combining innovative architectural design, user engagement, and historical sensitivity, the Rahmah Library exemplifies the potential of school libraries to enrich education and community life for generations to come.
