Range Life Home by RELM Builders + PLOTNONPLOT Architecture: A Sculptural Bungalow Blending Light, Privacy, and Landscape in Ottawa
A sculptural modern bungalow in Ottawa blending privacy, light, and landscape through thoughtful form, materials, and indoor-outdoor transitions.
Located in the mature residential neighborhood of Glabar Park in Ottawa, Canada, Range Life Home is a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic bungalow—designed by PLOTNONPLOT Architecture in collaboration with RELM Builders. Completed in 2023 and spanning 3,700 square feet, the home accommodates the evolving needs of a young family while engaging in a thoughtful dialogue with its suburban context.

A Minimalist Exterior that Prioritizes Privacy and Light
From the street, the Range Life Home appears sculptural and discreet. The architects carefully reduced visual exposure through strategic façade cuts, oblique angles, and deep roof overhangs. These architectural moves not only maintain a sense of privacy but also choreograph dynamic views and natural light throughout the day. The minimalist white exterior, punctuated with dramatic vertical slices, evokes a monolithic presence softened by its relationship with the garden and natural surroundings.

Blurring Boundaries Between Indoors and Out
A central design goal was to dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior spaces—a nod to the name “Range Life,” which references the expansive freedom of outdoor living. The design introduces a variety of spatial thresholds: carved-out rooflines, semi-sheltered outdoor areas, and transitional interiors that invite natural ventilation and sunlight. These architectural gestures create an immersive living experience that feels simultaneously open and secure.

Interior Design: Light, Texture, and Functionality
Inside, the home unfolds in a sequence of open-plan living spaces, with high ceilings, wide windows, and tactile materials that enrich the sensory experience. Custom screening elements and a careful programming of spaces ensure that even in an open layout, areas of privacy and intimacy are preserved. Light becomes a key design material—filtered through layers of glass, overhangs, and perforated surfaces—shifting from bright to diffused throughout the day.

Material Palette and Detailing
A curated selection of materials—ranging from Beldenbrick masonry and Euroline fenestration to Mirage flooring and Bocci lighting fixtures—anchors the home in a clean yet warm modern aesthetic. The use of whitewashed surfaces, light woods, and architectural lighting enhances the perception of spaciousness and calm, while enabling changing light patterns to animate the interiors. Efficient Home handled the mechanical design, ensuring the residence meets high standards of sustainable, high-performance living.

Adapting to Restrictions with Playful Form
Despite strict covenants along the street, the architects embraced the challenge by incorporating playful volumetric expressions that reimagine traditional form. From its carved-out roof profiles to the zigzagging facades and nuanced spatial compositions, Range Life Home creates moments of surprise and delight, making it a home that continuously reveals itself to its inhabitants and guests.
