Adaptive Reuse in the Heart of Belo Horizonte

Located in downtown Belo Horizonte, Brazil, this 110m² apartment renovation by Jô Vasconcellos Arquitetos Associados breathes new life into a mid-century residential unit. Originally built in 1961, the Pilar Building features diverse floorplans and a mixed-use ground floor, integrating commercial spaces with residential living.

Enhancing Spatial Fluidity & Natural Elements

The design approach aimed to align the apartment with the owner’s functional needs while maximizing spatial integration. The original layout, composed of fragmented small rooms, was reimagined into an open-plan configuration. A key aspect of the renovation was the exposure of the building’s original concrete structures, previously concealed under layers of materials. This not only emphasizes the apartment’s architectural authenticity but also contributes to a raw, modern aesthetic.

To unify the space, the architects opted for a single flooring material, streamlining the apartment’s visual flow. The intervention also prioritized natural lighting and framed views of the Municipal Park, enhancing the connection between the interior and its urban surroundings.

Material Innovation & Contemporary Functionality

One of the defining elements of the refurbishment was the use of unconventional materials and geometric forms, creating a contemporary contrast within the historic structure. The transformation fosters a casual and flexible living environment, where each element contributes to an open and airy ambiance.

This adaptive reuse project exemplifies how thoughtful renovation strategies can revitalize older urban dwellings, balancing historical integrity with modern living demands.
