Retrofit Brigadeiro by Coletivo de Arquitetos: Modernizing a São Paulo Landmark Through Sustainable Urban Renewal
Retrofit Brigadeiro modernizes a São Paulo building with a U-glass façade, improving acoustics, light quality, and spatial functionality.
Located in the heart of São Paulo, Retrofit Brigadeiro is a transformative architectural renovation project by Coletivo de Arquitetos that reimagines a mid-century building on Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio. With a total area of 4,184 m², the 2018 project involved comprehensive spatial and facade upgrades, reflecting the growing movement toward adaptive reuse, sustainable design, and urban regeneration in Brazil’s largest city.

Architectural Vision: A Dialogue Between Past and Present
Led by architects Guile Amadeu, Gustavo Fontes, and Rodrigo Lacerda, the design team approached the retrofit with the intention of honoring the building’s urban context while dramatically improving its functional and environmental performance. The intervention focused on reorganizing the interior layout, particularly in the access areas and centralized bathroom cores, ensuring efficient circulation and usability across all standard floors.

Façade Transformation: U-Glass as an Urban Skin
One of the project’s most distinctive features is the introduction of a new façade system on the side facing Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio. The original exterior was replaced with a double-layered U-glass curtain wall, a strategic decision driven by three core objectives: updating the building's visual identity, maximizing natural daylight, and enhancing acoustic insulation from the high-traffic avenue.
The translucent U-glass panels form a semi-transparent skin that acts as both a thermal and acoustic buffer and a privacy screen, addressing the challenges of intense urban noise while creating a visually cohesive identity. Despite the added privacy, each floor along the 11-meter front elevation features a balcony and full-height windows, maintaining a visual connection between the interior spaces and the dynamic life of the city outside.

Interior Atmosphere: Bright, Functional, and Flexible
Inside, the renovation introduced a bright, contemporary ambiance while preserving key structural elements. The integration of floor-to-ceiling windows and open-plan layouts enhances the spatial experience, promoting flexibility for a variety of future uses—be it residential, commercial, or mixed-use. The incorporation of natural materials, neutral tones, and thoughtful furniture arrangements complements the minimalist architecture, creating a warm and inviting environment.

Urban Impact and Sustainability
Retrofit Brigadeiro exemplifies how existing buildings can be reprogrammed for modern life without demolition, reducing construction waste and preserving urban heritage. By investing in a high-performance façade system and improving energy efficiency, the project contributes to sustainable urban development and sets a precedent for similar retrofits in dense metropolitan settings.
