Riverside House by xiān Architects: A Harmonious Retreat Amidst Jiudu River Landscapes
Riverside House by xiān Architects blends abstract architecture with northern China’s rugged landscapes, integrating riverfront terraces, cantilevered volumes, and nature-inspired spaces.
Located in a serene village on Beijing’s outskirts, Riverside House by xiān Architects is a masterful response to northern China’s rugged landscape and flowing waterways. Completed in 2024, this 288 m² residence is nestled north of the Jiudu River, surrounded by a trout house, a home party house, and traditional village homes.

Embracing the Timeless Flow of the Jiudu River
The Jiudu River—an ancient and meandering watercourse—defines both the physical and conceptual framework of the project. Rather than being an object of mere admiration, the river is treated as a companion, its winding path inspiring the house’s subtle integration with nature. The residence sits adjacent to the river’s primal forces, absorbing its momentum while maintaining a serene presence within the landscape.

Architecture Inspired by the Northern Mountains
To the north, the imposing mountains of Beijing manifest “Gaunt, Exposed, Great Silence, Dark Energy,” shaping the architectural vision. Riverside House embodies these geological traits through abstract, rock-like forms that emphasize strength and permanence. The home’s sculptural volumes echo the primal terrain, fostering a dialogue between human habitation and natural forces.

Spatial Innovation and Psychological Depth
The residence deconstructs the concept of urban living into independent, layered spaces. Referred to by the architects as “Urban Luggage”, the house’s design disperses rooms along meandering paths to create multi-layered psychological distances. Cantilevered roof slabs, elevated terraces, and carefully calculated void-solid relationships define the volumetric interplay, transforming compact spaces into expansive experiences. Each building mass interacts with its neighbor while maintaining autonomy, creating a harmonious balance of privacy, openness, and communal engagement.

Terraces, Platforms, and Contemplative Landscapes
A standout feature of Riverside House is the Stargazing Platform, located at the northeast corner of the second-floor terrace. Concrete walls rise to frame this contemplative space, bridging twin solid volumes and extending the perception of “heaven and earth.” Here, residents are invited to engage with nature’s raw intensity: roaring skies, distilled shadows, and silent winds converge to offer a profound sense of place.

Materiality and Architectural Expression
The interior palette blends natural wood with raw concrete, creating spaces that are at once warm and monumental. The architecture amplifies the elemental qualities of the surrounding landscape, extracting pure intensity from nature while offering comfort and elegance. From cantilevered terraces to void-rich interiors, every design gesture emphasizes a connection between the human and the elemental.

A Dialogue Between Human and Nature
Riverside House is more than a residence—it is an exploration of coexistence with the forces of nature. The home navigates the tension between solidity and openness, solitude and connection, producing a layered, experiential environment. As the fields fade and daily routines shift, the architecture transforms, inviting occupants to lean on the timeless rhythms of “heaven and earth.”
