Rock&Ride Shenzhen MixC Popup Store by Within-Beyond Studio: Industrial Elegance Meets Urban Vitality
Rock&Ride Popup Store blends industrial design with urban vibrancy, creating a bold, immersive retail experience in Shenzhen MixC World.
A Bold Architectural Statement at the Heart of Shenzhen
Located in the bustling core of Shenzhen MixC World, the Rock&Ride Popup Store by Within-Beyond Studio redefines the concept of temporary retail architecture. With a compact footprint of 170 square meters, this 2023 project transforms a high-traffic commercial corridor into an immersive brand experience, blending industrial symbolism with refined spatial design.

Design Inspiration: From Jet Propulsion to Jewelry
The design language of the popup store draws heavily from heavy industrial aesthetics, channeling imagery from fuel towers and jet propulsion systems. These mechanical forms symbolize "energy storage" and "ejection"—a dynamic metaphor that reflects the rebellious and high-octane identity of Rock&Ride, an American retro jewelry brand. The architecture becomes a vessel of movement and power, a tangible representation of the brand's free-spirited ethos.

Context and Challenge: Lightness vs. Heaviness in Urban Space
The site—anchored at the intersection of a busy pedestrian street and sheltered by a pre-existing canopy—posed key challenges. The architects had to navigate the dichotomy of creating a "light" temporary structure while conveying the "heaviness" of a premium brand. Additionally, the canopy’s influence on form demanded a sensitive response to spatial and urban dynamics.

Architectural Response: Sculpting Energy with Steel and Light
The building’s form is defined by a series of weathered steel cylinders, enclosing the site with a sculptural strength. The cantilevered canopy informed the setback of the main façade, which in turn enhances the visibility of the pop-up from the street. By carving a sloped intersection into the primary volume, the architects reveal a hollowed-out cavity, lined with cone-shaped metallic interiors and illuminated with flame-like lighting—a literal reference to jet engines and a figurative nod to high energy.
This expressive entrance not only draws attention but also creates architectural drama and a sense of propulsion. The rear façade, facing a tranquil garden, offers a contrasting experience with a more subdued and composed character, demonstrating the project’s sensitive urban duality.

Public Space Integration: A Step Backward to Leap Forward
In keeping with the principles of block-type commercial urbanism, the design adopts a "step back to advance" strategy. By setting back the building from the main circulation route, the architects maximize public open space, providing shelter and shaded waiting areas during peak hours. This gesture blurs the boundary between retail and civic space, making the store a vibrant extension of the urban fabric.

Brand Expression Through Architecture
While temporary by nature, the structure delivers lasting brand impact. The weathered steel envelope creates visual weight and durability, challenging the typical notions of a lightweight pop-up. Transparent curtain walls open the interior to the public realm, showcasing the vibrant retail atmosphere. Towering American highway-style signage extends above the building’s height limits, boldly broadcasting the brand’s identity across the commercial strip.

Interior Design: Industrial Rawness Meets Artistic Refinement
Inside, the layout emphasizes efficiency and narrative flow. Display cabinets line the periphery, optimizing product visibility, while structural cylindrical elements pierce the interior, acting as mini-galleries for art installations. These installations echo the store’s industrial exterior, while introducing moments of delicacy and craft, resonating with the handcrafted nature of Rock&Ride jewelry.
Above, wave-like ceiling elements fashioned from recycled corrugated metal guide movement and reinforce the material palette. Artistic focal points—ranging from kinetic sculptures to floral compositions—enhance the emotional texture of the space, offering visual intrigue and brand storytelling.

A New Typology for Urban Pop-ups
The Rock&Ride Shenzhen MixC Popup Store exemplifies how temporary architecture can leave a permanent impression. It demonstrates the power of design to embody brand identity, reimagine public space, and captivate urban dwellers through an expressive architectural narrative. By merging industrial materials, symbolic form, and urban generosity, Within-Beyond Studio sets a bold precedent for future pop-up retail environments.
