Deschenaux Architects introduces a groundbreaking project in Estavayer, Switzerland – the House in Vuissens. Nestled in the secluded village of Vuissens, this single-family residence stands as a testament to innovative architecture that seamlessly blends with its rural surroundings. This article explores the design elements, spatial considerations, and material choices that make this house a unique and contemporary addition to the Swiss landscape.

Design Philosophy and Location

Situated in the canton of Fribourg, Vuissens is a village that has successfully preserved its rural charm. Deschenaux Architects aimed to create a dwelling that not only complements the existing villas in the neighborhood but also takes advantage of the last available land, strategically positioned in front of a mysterious forest.

Spatial Integration with Nature

The house is strategically oriented to break free from parcel boundaries, extending gracefully towards the adjacent forest. The design follows the natural slope of the land, creating a seamless connection with the surroundings. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a substantial concrete wall, guiding them towards an entrance illuminated by a strip of light. The interior spaces are thoughtfully integrated into the natural topography, with a kitchen that descends gracefully, embracing the land's contours.

The main living room, adorned with floor-to-ceiling glazing, opens up to a mesmerizing view of the forest. The spatial journey culminates in a double-height loggia, offering a perfect blend of privacy and openness. The upstairs area features a central wall that accentuates the length of the house, with a corridor connecting both ends. The design ensures a constant connection with nature, whether through a concrete gable end providing privacy for an open-air balcony or a large opening revealing the forest on the opposite side

Pragmatic Construction Inspired by Rural Aesthetics

The rural surroundings heavily influence the construction and material choices. Concrete serves as the primary envelope, providing durability and weather resistance. Cement bricks define the heated portion of the house, creating a harmonious unity between the interior and exterior. The use of mineral-based insulation, applied as a single layer, reflects a pragmatic approach akin to traditional brick wall construction.
