RWO House by Gonzalo Rufin Arquitectos: A Bridge-Like Home Immersed in the Chilean Landscape
RWO House in Matanzas, Chile, floats above a ridge with a wooden rib structure, steel frame, shutters, and panoramic coastal views.
Set high above the dramatic ridge of La Vega de Pupuya in Matanzas, Chile, RWO House by Gonzalo Rufin Arquitectos is a powerful example of contemporary residential design rooted in landscape sensitivity. Completed in 2025 and spanning 102 m², the home takes shape as a lightweight bridge suspended above the terrain—offering extraordinary views while minimizing ecological impact.
Through a carefully crafted system of wooden ribs, elevated walkways, steel framing, and operable shutters, the project demonstrates how minimal intervention and thoughtful spatial strategy can create a living environment that is both simple and deeply connected to nature.

A House that Floats Over the Ridge
The architects’ first and defining gesture was to position the house atop the site’s highest and most exposed ridge, treating the location as a natural lookout. Instead of carving into the terrain, the structure lifts itself above the ground in a long, slender volume—resembling a bridge suspended between two points.
This elevated form allows the house to:
- Embrace panoramic views of the coastal landscape
- Reduce its footprint and environmental disturbance
- Create a unique spatial experience that feels both sheltered and open
The house’s bridge-like condition also reinforces its identity as a passage—a place where one moves through nature rather than dominates it.

Wooden Rib System and Exterior Walkway
One of the most distinctive features of RWO House is the repetitive wooden rib structure that forms its spine. These ribs run along the length of the home, supporting an elongated exterior walkway that allows users to move through the entire house from the outside.
This strategy offers several advantages:
- Independent access to the kitchen, living space, and both bedrooms
- A continuous connection to the outdoors
- A dramatic perspective shift as occupants traverse the house alongside the ridge
The walkway becomes more than circulation—it's an architectural promenade that reinforces the home’s immersion in its surroundings.

Controlling Light, Privacy, and Climate
To modulate northern light and create flexible privacy conditions, the architects incorporated wooden shutter systems along the façade. These operable elements allow residents to adjust lighting levels throughout the day, creating a sense of openness or intimacy depending on conditions.
The shutters also provide:
- Passive thermal control
- Protection from coastal winds
- A visually rhythmic façade that echoes the rib structure

Lightweight Steel Structure for Minimal Impact
While the ribs articulate the house’s architectural rhythm, the primary structural strength comes from a steel frame crafted by regional manufacturers such as Cintac, Maderas ConCon, and Vidrieria Acuario. This frame rests delicately atop the wooden ribs, reinforcing the home's linear form and minimizing site disturbance.
The hybrid system—steel above, timber below—unifies aesthetics, durability, and environmental respect.

A Functional and Flexible Interior
Despite its compact footprint, the interior is organized efficiently to support a relaxed lifestyle aligned with outdoor activity. The program includes:
- Two bedrooms
- Two bathrooms
- A kitchen
- An integrated living–dining area
- A dedicated entrance for sports and surf equipment
Every interior space also benefits from its own independent access, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on fluid circulation and privacy.
Materially, the warm tones of wood, exposed beams, and expansive glazing create a sense of calm connectedness with the exterior landscape.

Architecture That Frames the Landscape Rather Than Competes With It
RWO House represents Gonzalo Rufin Arquitectos’ commitment to designing sustainable, understated architecture that blends into the natural environment. The project embraces simplicity—both in aesthetics and lifestyle—while creating a home that amplifies the beauty of the Chilean coast.
