Celebrating Equine Culture Through Contemporary Architecture

Situated within the historic Jebel Ali Racecourse in Dubai, the Saddling Boxes & Private Deck by Studio.D04 redefines equestrian architecture design by merging cultural heritage with modern spatial fluidity. This 662-square-meter facility is more than a functional sports structure—it is an architectural tribute to horsemanship, offering a place of rest, socialization, and seamless interaction between rider and horse.

Honoring a Landmark of Dubai's Equestrian Heritage

Jebel Ali Racecourse, founded in 1990 under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, serves as a cornerstone of Dubai’s racing legacy. The Saddling Boxes & Private Deck honors this history with a design that respects the rhythm of equine movement while celebrating the venue’s role in community engagement and elite sport.

A Language of Motion and Light

The design philosophy is rooted in fluidity. Inspired by the dynamic choreography of race day, the architecture reflects the graceful movement of horses. Every space flows naturally into the next, with thoughtful attention given to air and light. Structural openings allow sunlight to shift across the building’s surfaces throughout the day, creating a vibrant interplay of light and shadow. Natural ventilation contributes to a breathable atmosphere, reinforcing the bond between horse, rider, and environment.

Ground-Level Comfort Meets Elevated Exclusivity

The building is organized across two functional levels. The ground floor is dedicated to equine comfort, utilizing soft and non-disruptive materials such as rubber pavers and aggregate finishes that ease the movement of horses. The upper level, an exclusive private deck, offers panoramic views of the racetrack. It acts as a social hub for post-race gatherings, designed to preserve openness while maintaining structural efficiency.

Materiality as a Design Narrative

A carefully selected palette of materials contributes to both function and aesthetic. Timber introduces natural warmth, while gabion walls filled with local stone create a robust yet elegant presence that harmonizes with the landscape. The use of gravel and exposed aggregate reinforces a tactile connection to the surrounding terrain. These materials are not decorative but integral to the sensory and spatial experience of the architecture.

Precision Construction with Minimal Impact

Studio.D04 employed a construction strategy that prioritized structural clarity and environmental sensitivity. The elevated deck was engineered for minimal impact on the site, maintaining open sightlines and an airy spatial composition. Each structural element is integrated to ensure coherence and ease of construction, reflecting the architects’ dedication to both beauty and performance.

A Tribute to Horsemanship in Built Form

The Saddling Boxes & Private Deck elevates equestrian architecture design by capturing the essence of horsemanship—grace, rhythm, strength, and legacy. Through its integration of tradition and contemporary aesthetics, the project offers a unique architectural identity rooted in both place and practice. It is not only a space for horses and riders but a dynamic setting where architecture becomes part of the equestrian performance itself.
