The Scenius 26003 Pavilion, designed by Berlin-based architect Daryan Knoblauch, stands as a groundbreaking example of temporary architecture that redefines urban engagement. Winning first prize in an open competition organized by Concéntrico and Porto Academy, the pavilion is part of a visionary 10-year infrastructural adaptation plan for the city of Logroño. Knoblauch’s proposal envisions a series of temporary pavilions deployed on a biyearly rhythm, enriching the cityscape with flexible, participatory structures over the next decade.

A Pavilion That Moves With the City

At the heart of Scenius 26003 is the Megaphone Pavilion, a prototypical manifestation of the project’s core philosophy: architecture as movement. This temporary structure features a fifteen-meter-high custom-knit tensile fabric, suspended from a singular rented crane that rises above the surrounding urban forest. Seven locally sourced stones define the pavilion’s perimeter, anchoring the structure while maintaining a delicate balance with its natural and built context.

The pavilion’s flexible tensile structure allows it to adapt to various urban morphologies. Spanning 250 square meters, the shimmering silver textile creates an elevated meeting space where local and external voices converge, fostering dialogue and collective experiences. The pavilion functions as more than just a shelter; it’s a responsive membrane that reacts to environmental conditions, human movement, and urban density, offering a dynamic architectural experience.

Materiality and Interaction

The tensile fabric is central to the pavilion’s identity. Its reflective and breathable qualities allow it to billow with the wind, capture sunlight, and interact with visitors, creating a continuously evolving atmosphere. Suspended by a crane and anchored with eight local stones, the structure achieves a poetic interplay between lightness and monumentality, standing in contrast to the rigid, stoic surroundings of Logroño’s urban forest.

Remarkably, the pavilion demonstrates that innovative temporary architecture can be realized using accessible, street-found construction devices and alternative materials, emphasizing sustainability, resourcefulness, and community engagement.

A Vision for Future Urban Landscapes

Scenius 26003 is not just an installation; it is a forward-thinking experiment in adaptive urban design. By leveraging lightweight, flexible materials and modular construction techniques, Daryan Knoblauch reimagines how cities can incorporate temporary, responsive, and socially engaging structures into their long-term development plans. The pavilion is a celebration of the interplay between architecture, climate, and human presence, proving that temporary installations can leave a lasting impact on urban life.
