Secret Garden House by ROOM+ Design & Build: A Lush Urban Retreat in the Heart of Ho Chi Minh City
Secret Garden House blends modern design with lush gardens, offering privacy, natural light, and tranquility in bustling Ho Chi Minh City.
In the bustling labyrinth of Ho Chi Minh City's alleyways, Secret Garden House by ROOM+ Design & Build reimagines the Vietnamese townhouse as a sanctuary of serenity, greenery, and architectural elegance. Designed for a four-member family, this four-story residence transforms a tight, 95-square-meter corner plot into a layered urban oasis, harmonizing modern living with the natural environment.

A Contemporary Urban Townhouse Rooted in Vietnamese Context
Since the 18th century, the townhouse typology has become deeply embedded in Vietnam’s urban landscape, especially in dense cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Typically situated in narrow alleyways, these homes are appreciated for their accessibility, investment potential, and proximity to city amenities. However, they often suffer from limited natural light, ventilation, privacy, and green space.
Secret Garden House was conceived to tackle these challenges head-on, offering a modern architectural solution that prioritizes light, ventilation, and nature, while responding sensitively to the irregular urban fabric of Ho Chi Minh City.

Site-Specific Design and Sculptural Geometry
The residence occupies a plot at the intersection of two narrow alleys without sidewalks, presenting both spatial constraints and creative opportunities. ROOM+ Design & Build responded with a site-sensitive layout and a sculptural architectural language that uses convex and concave forms to generate rhythm and spatial fluidity.
The building’s corner is set back to form a leafy entry courtyard, subtly separating the home from the street while enhancing privacy. A curving granite stair leads to a recessed, elliptical verandah, creating a graceful transition from exterior to interior. The undulating geometry continues across the building’s façade, where recessed windows, deep planters, and curved terraces introduce depth, texture, and passive environmental strategies.

Integrating Light, Greenery, and Vertical Circulation
Beyond the facade lies the home’s most enchanting feature: a hidden internal garden, housing a mature acerola cherry tree and a variety of tropical plants. This "secret garden" is strategically placed at the rear of the property, inviting natural daylight and cool breezes into the heart of the home through decorative perforated brick walls that blur the boundaries between inside and out.
In addition to two open balconies that overlook the garden, the house includes a high-end hydraulic glass elevator, enabling smooth vertical circulation across all four levels. The staircase design, partially open and naturally lit, offers another experience of movement that connects the family to the lush environment as they ascend.

Materials, Interiors, and the Rooftop Escape
Inside, the home achieves a refined simplicity. Beige-painted walls, warm timber floors, and custom-built curving cabinetry foster an atmosphere of comfort and elegance. The architectural material palette was selected not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its ability to enhance thermal comfort and longevity.
As one reaches the top floor, the journey culminates in a rooftop garden, bursting with trees, flowering plants, and seasonal greenery. This elevated garden terrace functions as a tranquil sanctuary above the city’s noise—a rare luxury in Vietnam’s rapidly urbanizing environments.

A Model for Nature-Integrated Townhouse Living
Secret Garden House serves as a compelling model for sustainable, human-centered urban housing. It proves that even within compact sites and dense neighborhoods, thoughtful design can unlock the potential for light, air, greenery, and well-being.
By merging sculptural architecture with intimate garden spaces, ROOM+ Design & Build have crafted more than just a home—they’ve created a secret sanctuary rooted in context, climate, and culture.
