Sede Ser Headquarters by Atelier 77 – A Sustainable, Socially Driven Architectural Expansion in Rio de Janeiro
A sustainable, community-focused headquarters blending historic preservation with modern design, offering educational spaces, natural ventilation, and inclusive architecture in Rio de Janeiro.
The Sede Ser Headquarters, designed by Atelier 77 and located in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, stands as a powerful example of how architecture can foster social impact, education, sustainability, and community development. Completed in 2024, this 1,297 m² institutional project expands a long-standing organization dedicated to empowering youth in vulnerable regions through programs in education, culture, work, and health.
Since its founding in 2002, Ser Cidadão has acted as a transformative force in marginalized territories. In 2006, the organization received the donation of a historic mansion—the former home of doctor and senator Júlio Cesário de Melo. This building and its legacy inspired the architectural gesture: creating spaces that welcome, protect, educate, and cultivate belonging.

Respect for Heritage and Landscape
The site sits at the center of Santa Cruz and preserves a lush garden with century-old trees, making landscape preservation a core design principle. The main challenge for Atelier 77 was to expand the headquarters while maintaining ongoing activities and respecting the historical and environmental value of the original mansion.
To achieve this, the new volume was discreetly positioned at the back of the property, immersed within the existing vegetation. This approach safeguards the mansion’s symbolic presence while introducing a contemporary architectural identity that blends harmoniously with nature.

Sustainable, Efficient, and Accessible Construction
The design follows a simple, sustainable, and accessible construction system, prioritizing efficiency and long-term performance. The building is constructed using:
- Metal structural systems
- Cement panels within a dry-construction method
- Low-cost, low-maintenance detailing
The architecture enhances thermal and acoustic comfort, integrating:
- Cross ventilation
- Generous natural lighting
- Rainwater harvesting systems
- Solar energy panels
These environmentally responsible choices result in a high-performance green building engineered for durability, resilience, and community use.

A Socially Engaged Spatial Composition
Programmatically, the complex is organized into two transverse blocks connected by a covered open plaza. This central space acts as:
- A circulation spine
- A place of interaction and gathering
- A social connector that encourages community engagement
The circulation route rises toward a collective terrace, an open-air platform that embraces the winds and view of Santa Cruz. This panoramic terrace becomes a symbolic extension of learning, connecting the educational mission of Ser Cidadão with the broader urban horizon.

Architecture as a Tool for Inclusion
More than an architectural extension, the new Sede Ser Headquarters emphasizes the power of architecture as a tool for social inclusion. By thoughtfully blending the historic mansion with a modern sustainable structure, the project reinforces a narrative of continuity, memory, and transformation.
The headquarters becomes a manifesto—architecture can shape futures, inspire growth, and strengthen community identity.
“The expansion of Ser Cidadão reflects architecture’s role as a social tool: preserving the past, enhancing the present, and inspiring futures.”
