Segur Flat by faire transforms a compact Paris apartment with open-plan design, bespoke wooden volumes, natural light, and crafted materiality.
A Contemporary Parisian Apartment Renovation
The Segur Flat by faire architects redefines compact living in the heart of Paris’s 7th arrondissement, just a few steps away from Les Invalides. This 48 m² apartment, originally divided into small, enclosed rooms, lacked natural light, a functional kitchen, and open circulation. The renovation transforms it into a bright, connected living space that balances modern functionality with crafted materiality.


Creating Spatial Continuity
The design challenge was to open the flat while maintaining functionality and intimacy. By removing most of the existing walls and introducing a glass partition, the architects ensured that light flows seamlessly throughout the apartment. This continuity mirrors the external balcony, allowing circulation along the façade and connecting each space through a rhythm of windows.


Three Wooden Volumes as Structural Anchors
Acting both as architects and carpenters, Nikhil Calas and Federico Diodato designed three bespoke wooden volumes that structure the apartment while preserving openness:
1. The Kitchen
Crafted in wood and granite, the kitchen forms a transition space that integrates with the living and dining areas. Materials such as okoumé and birch plywood, fluted glass, and a granite countertop give the kitchen an elegant yet robust character, enhancing continuity and visual depth.
2. The Bookcase
Designed as both storage and a sculptural element, the bookcase combines light and dark woods, round and straight forms, and alternating filled and void sections. Its contrast of hand-turned ipé posts, birch plywood shelves, and okoumé plywood panels makes it both functional and visually animated.
3. The Bedroom Cupboard
The third volume is a multifunctional storage system wrapping around the bed. Combining a desk, storage units, and bedside tables, it maximizes the small space while maintaining warmth and intimacy.


Light, Materiality, and Atmosphere
The open-plan design is elevated by the interplay of contrasting materials and a cascade of natural light streaming through multiple windows. The combination of wood textures, granite surfaces, and glass details creates a tactile richness, giving the flat a warm and homely ambiance.


A Parisian Flat Reimagined
With this renovation, faire has crafted a contemporary Parisian apartment that demonstrates how intelligent spatial strategies and handcrafted details can transform a compact home into a functional, fluid, and atmospheric living environment. The Segur Flat is not just a renovation—it is a statement on how architecture and carpentry can merge to create timeless, adaptable interiors.
