Shuinian Station by Atelier ArchFAN: A Fusion of History, Nature, and Modern Design
Shuinian Station revitalizes a historic water mill, blending heritage, nature, and modern design for sustainable rural development.
Shuinian Station
Shuinian Station, designed by Atelier ArchFAN, is a remarkable architectural project located in Le Shan Shi, China. This innovative design breathes new life into a historic rural water mill house, seamlessly blending heritage, nature, and modern architecture. Situated on a site covering approximately 15 acres, the project serves as a demonstration and gateway for future development, transforming the area into a vibrant recreational and investment hub.

Historical Significance
Preserving the Legacy of a Rural Water Mill
The original building, a water mill house with over 40 years of history, was once a hub of agricultural activity. Powered by a flowing water channel, it embodied the spirit of rural ingenuity. However, as modern developments rendered its function obsolete, the structure fell into disrepair.

A Picturesque Natural Setting
The site is surrounded by ecological treasures, including a dense jungle to the south, existing farmland, and a water channel. The town government’s vision aimed to transform this area into a field activity center, creating opportunities for recreation, tourism, and regional revitalization.

Design Philosophy: Balancing Tradition and Innovation
Enhancing Environmental Harmony
Atelier ArchFAN’s design embraces key environmental elements—water channels, woods, and farmland. By retaining the original water flow dynamics and integrating the remains of agricultural infrastructure, the design ensures a seamless connection between the past and present.
Growth on Site
The project features a "pavilion" under existing trees, preserving the natural silhouettes that evoke memories of the old mill house. A second-story viewing platform offers panoramic views of the countryside, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the serene rural atmosphere.

Functional and Structural Innovation
Cost-Effective Modular Design
Recognizing the need for economy and flexibility, the design employs modular construction with prefabricated profiles and high-strength bolt connections. The use of standardized components (4-meter and 6-meter lengths) reduces material waste and enables ease of assembly and disassembly.
Reversibility and Sustainability
The structure’s reversible design ensures adaptability for future needs. Positioned on an open space, the building’s components can be disassembled, relocated, or repurposed, emphasizing environmental responsibility.

Features of Shuinian Station
The "Moulin Rouge"
The striking orange steel frame of the structure, nicknamed "Moulin Rouge," is a standout feature. Nestled under the shade of trees, it offers a vibrant focal point visible from a distance, attracting visitors and creating a lively ambiance.
Versatile Recreational Spaces
The building’s open framework houses:
- Solid wood tables and stools
- A second-floor platform for scenic views
- A hanging basket swing
- A steel climbing frame
These features provide spaces for rest, gathering, and play, catering to both locals and tourists.

Water: The Heart of the Design
Celebrating Fluid Dynamics
The water channel, a vital element of the site, forms a vortex beneath the millstone, showcasing the beauty of fluid dynamics. Visitors can observe the swirling water, listen to its sounds, and reflect on the vibrant agricultural past of the mill.
Integrating Agricultural Remains
A simple "bridge" spans the channel, preserving the original flow relationships while providing a perfect vantage point to appreciate the movement of water and its interaction with the architecture.

Community and Cultural Impact
A Gateway to Regional Renewal
As the first phase of a larger developmental vision, Shuinian Station sets the tone for transforming the surrounding 15-acre land. It serves as a hub for recreation, a beacon for potential investors, and a symbol of sustainable rural revitalization.
Lighting Up the Countryside
At night, the pavilion’s lights illuminate the landscape, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This visual appeal enhances its role as a community landmark and gathering space.
Shuinian Station by Atelier ArchFAN is a masterful blend of history, nature, and innovative design. By honoring the legacy of the water mill while addressing modern needs, the project revitalizes the area and fosters regional development. Its thoughtful integration of environmental elements, cost-effective modular construction, and multifunctional spaces make it a model for sustainable and culturally sensitive architecture.
