SND Concept Store by Various Associates: A Dune-Inspired Retail Sanctuary in Shenzhen
SND Concept Store in Shenzhen features a monumental dune, iron fixtures, and dynamic lighting, creating an immersive, serene, and sculptural retail experience.
In the heart of Shenzhen, the SND Concept Store designed by Various Associates transforms the retail experience into an architectural journey. Spanning 500 square meters, this immersive space redefines what a fashion store can be—blurring the line between retail, installation, and art. Completed in 2022, the project is a bold statement of how architecture can shape brand identity through spatial storytelling.

A Monumental Dune in the City
At the core of the concept lies an immaculate white dune, rising like an otherworldly landscape against a dramatic black backdrop. The sculptural form provides a serene escape from the urban chaos, evoking distant memories of sand and desert landscapes. Clothing collections are displayed like precious artifacts, inviting visitors to embark on an exploration beyond conventional shopping.
One side of the dune reveals a dark pathway resembling a mine, illuminated by sharp industrial lights. This symbolic descent recalls the excavation of hidden treasures, with the steel grille offering glimpses of shifting light and shadow. The narrative creates a layered experience, transporting visitors into a dreamlike space that fuses fashion, memory, and terrain.

Architecture as Experience
The design team utilized the existing building height to conceal the retail area beneath the dune. The result is a column-free structure with a striking 21-meter diagonal span, creating a monumental interior free of structural interruptions. This allowed for expansive display areas and fitting rooms while maintaining a sense of purity and continuity.
The dune-like form not only defines the store’s unique identity but also cleverly integrates mechanical systems and pipelines. By embedding functionality within a sculptural form, the space achieves a minimalist yet powerful aesthetic that feels timeless and otherworldly. Customers move through a carefully planned circulation sequence, evoking the sensation of wandering through mountain caves and open valleys.

Iron and Sand: Materiality with Meaning
Materials play a central role in storytelling. Iron elements, referencing the brand’s first store in Chongqing, are used in display fixtures and furniture. The rawness of black iron contrasts with the pale backdrop of the dune, creating tension between weight and lightness, ruggedness and purity.
Custom display tables resemble rocks emerging from the sand, their surfaces animated by shifting light. The geometric yet organic design emphasizes texture, craftsmanship, and the tactile qualities of the materials—reinforcing the brand’s identity as both experimental and rooted in tradition.

The Role of Light and Shadow
Lighting transforms the monochrome environment into a living stage. A continuous circulation route of light guides visitors deeper into the space, creating rhythm and momentum. Focused beams highlight the textures of fabrics, while soft diffused lighting enhances the sense of openness.
The fitting rooms, tucked beneath the dune, are designed as sacred spaces illuminated under a metaphorical “moonlight.” Sensor-controlled lights gradually brighten as customers enter, elevating the act of trying on clothes into a ceremonial experience. Here, the interplay of shadows and reflections creates a moment of self-admiration, detached from the outside world.

A Narrative of Sand and Iron
More than a retail environment, the SND Concept Store functions as a storytelling space. The dune stands as a metaphor for the eternal forces of nature, while the iron details recall the strength and resilience of human craft. Together, they form a symbolic landscape where customers engage not only with fashion but also with memory, culture, and imagination.
