Sounder Inn by NEOSSPACE is a sustainable boutique retreat in Yuyao, blending nature, cultural heritage, and modern eco-friendly architecture seamlessly.
Located in the picturesque valley near Siming Lake in Yuyao, Sounder Inn by NEOSSPACE is a tranquil getaway designed to provide a seamless connection between architecture, nature, and history. This unique boutique hotel is a peaceful retreat from the urban hustle, offering visitors an immersive experience surrounded by mountains, rivers, and lush bamboo forests. Positioned adjacent to the historic Guanpei Village, which dates back to the Xining period of the Northern Song Dynasty, Sounder Inn embodies a rich cultural heritage intertwined with the serenity of its natural setting.

Architectural Concept and Design Philosophy
The 849 m² project follows a design approach that harmonizes with its environment, utilizing locally sourced sustainable materials and repurposed antique elements. The architectural language of Sounder Inn embraces a modern-rustic aesthetic, seamlessly blending contemporary minimalism with vernacular traditions. By integrating local craftsmanship and eco-friendly materials, the project fosters an ambiance of warmth, authenticity, and cultural continuity.
The inn’s architectural layout aligns organically with the terrain, creating a rural sanctuary that fosters a deep connection to nature. The guest rooms are arranged linearly along the mountain’s contour, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Public spaces are designed with an open-plan configuration to encourage interaction while maintaining intimacy and tranquility.

Sustainable Materials and Traditional Craftsmanship
In keeping with sustainable architecture principles, Sounder Inn utilizes recycled materials and local resources to minimize environmental impact. Key features include:
- Local stone: Enhancing the structure’s natural character while ensuring durability.
- Dried bamboo poles: Used to create an intricate decorative canopy beneath the roof.
- Handwoven rattan and grass elements: Applied to roofing, furniture, lighting fixtures, and partitions, adding tactile richness to the interiors.
- Bamboo repurposing: From wall lamps to stair railings, reinforcing the eco-conscious design approach.
- Reclaimed antique elements: Including entrance doors, stone steps, bedside pillar bases, long wooden tables, and decorative bamboo fans, preserving historical narratives within the contemporary space.

Interior Ambience: A Poetic Fusion of Past and Present
The interiors of Sounder Inn reflect an artistic blend of traditional Chinese aesthetics and modern sensibilities. Each space is curated to evoke tranquility and contemplation, with an emphasis on natural textures, warm lighting, and fluid spatial transitions. Notable design elements include:
- Rice paper ceiling installations: Mimicking undulating mountain landscapes, reinforcing a connection to the surrounding topography.
- Handcrafted rice paper lanterns: A fusion of antique lantern traditions and modern sculptural artistry.
- Expansive glass facades: Allowing natural light to filter through, creating an ever-changing interplay of shadows and reflections.

Spatial Arrangement and Guest Experience
The layout of Sounder Inn is meticulously designed to enhance guest comfort and appreciation of nature. The public area features an arc-roofed hall, functioning as a multifunctional space that integrates:
- A bar and coffee lounge for social gatherings.
- A leisure book bar offering a serene reading environment.
- A skylight atrium, where guests can witness the dynamic interplay of light and shadows created by the surrounding bamboo forest and flowing stream.
Guest rooms near the entrance are designed with a semi-enclosed garden concept, incorporating open wardrobes, washbasins, and bathrooms, maximizing spatial efficiency and maintaining an immersive outdoor connection.

A Rural Haven for Mindful Living
By skillfully merging modern hospitality with age-old traditions, Sounder Inn invites travelers to rediscover the essence of rural life while indulging in contemporary comforts. The project is a testament to the potential of circular construction and sustainable design, demonstrating how architecture can serve as a bridge between history, nature, and modern living. With a deep respect for local culture and materials, NEOSSPACE has crafted a sanctuary where guests can rejuvenate their senses, reconnect with nature, and experience the poetic charm of Yuyao’s timeless landscapes.
