SPIRAL FOREST: adaptive architecture
A visionary library redefining public space through adaptive architecture, flexible design, and community-driven innovation.
Spiral Forest envisions the library as a dynamic, multifunctional space shaped by the principles of adaptive architecture—a model capable of evolving in response to future challenges. Designed by Minh Chi and recognized as an Editor's Choice entry in the Libgen 2019 competition, this visionary project redefines the role of the library in contemporary urban life.
In today’s world, libraries are no longer solely spaces for reading. They are becoming social, cultural, and intellectual hubs. Spiral Forest responds to this shift by establishing a new programmatic system for library design. This system is based on a spiral organization model that evolves and grows over time, categorized by reading behaviors and other modes of public interaction.

Rather than isolating the building, Spiral Forest integrates the library with the surrounding urban landscape. The structure blends into the environment, creating an inviting, park-like experience where visitors can access the library from multiple directions. The core of the design dissolves the traditional boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, allowing the central square to extend both inward and outward.
The triangular layout of the building functions as a flexible framework for evolving user needs. Future expansions and uncertain events can be incorporated through this form without disrupting the whole. The resulting structure is not just a container for books but a generator of new experiences, including exhibitions, start-up hubs, and healthcare support.

The design embraces uncertainty and multiplicity. Rather than simply adapting to change, it anticipates it. This reflects a larger shift in architectural thinking—towards adaptive architecture as a tool for resilience, community integration, and innovation. Minh Chi’s Spiral Forest stands as a compelling blueprint for future-ready public architecture, where flexibility and imagination take center stage.
From young entrepreneurs to lifelong learners, everyone will find something in this library. A place where different disciplines meet, unexpected inspirations emerge, and architecture serves as a platform for evolving human needs.
