SSR Sombreiros House by Gálvez & Márton Arquitetura
L-shaped modern house in São Paulo blends wood, stone, and sustainability with open spaces, natural light, and tropical landscaping.
Nestled within a private residential development in the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil, the SSR Sombreiros House by Gálvez & Márton Arquitetura is a refined example of contemporary Brazilian residential architecture. Designed in 2018, the 1000-square-meter single-story home embraces the tropical climate and landscape through thoughtful spatial planning, materiality, and environmental strategies.

A Contemporary Retreat on Elevated Terrain
Set on a sloping plot of 3,000 square meters, the house adopts an “L”-shaped layout that elegantly navigates the uphill terrain. This architectural gesture not only maximizes views of the surrounding countryside but also creates a sheltered internal courtyard and central lawn—ideal for family gatherings and outdoor living.
With a modest 3-meter height, the residence is horizontally expansive, featuring extended eaves that shield the interiors from intense sunlight and heavy rains. This climatic responsiveness is complemented by the use of Cumarú wood slats, Travertine marble flooring, and natural Guarujá stone, giving the home an earthy and luxurious material palette that blends seamlessly with the environment.

Open-Plan Living and Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow
At the heart of the home lies a fluid integration of the living and dining areas with a covered veranda and gourmet kitchen. These spaces are unified by retractable sliding doors embedded in masonry walls, which allow for complete spatial flexibility and a harmonious connection to the outdoors.
The residence is constructed with a concrete base and a flat roof made of prestressed concrete panels supported by metal profiles. The roof serves a dual function—it houses solar panels for energy generation and facilitates rainwater harvesting for garden irrigation, reflecting the architects’ commitment to sustainable design.

Bioclimatic Strategies and Passive Comfort
The corridor leading to the bedrooms is lined with floor-to-ceiling pivoting windows, introducing cross ventilation and rhythmic natural lighting into the private quarters. In the bedrooms, rustic wooden floors contrast with the cool marble surfaces in the social zones, creating a warm and calming atmosphere for rest.
A dedicated wellness area, complete with a sauna and spa, opens toward the garden, reinforcing the home’s identity as a retreat. Adjacent to the main structure, the black volcanic stone swimming pool acts as a reflective plane, mirroring the sky and creating a dramatic visual element.

Landscape Integration and Outdoor Living
Landscaped by Luciana Moraes, the property features a strategically planted Jabuticabeira tree, offering natural shading to the veranda during the sunniest hours. A cantilevered metal pergola creates a semi-open outdoor lounge, allowing residents to enjoy the views, pool, and garden under filtered light.

Sustainability and Material Honesty
The home’s environmental strategies—including the use of locally sourced materials, passive solar control, and renewable energy—enhance its livability while minimizing its ecological footprint. The honest expression of materials—untreated wood, exposed stone, and clean concrete—reinforces a design language rooted in Brazilian modernism, yet updated for today’s sustainable lifestyle.
SSR Sombreiros House stands as a serene and climate-responsive home, offering elegant simplicity, comfort, and an immersive connection to nature—hallmarks of contemporary architecture in Brazil.
