Station Forecourt Zwolle – A Seamless Blend of Urban Design and Nature
PosadMaxwan’s Station Forecourt Zwolle seamlessly integrates greenery, daylight, and sustainability, creating a cyclist-friendly, underground parking entrance that connects city and nature.
Located in the heart of Zwolle, The Netherlands, the Station Forecourt Zwolle by PosadMaxwan redefines the experience of public transit spaces. Completed in 2022, this innovative project focuses on creating a green, cyclist-friendly environment that seamlessly connects the bustling city square with the underground bicycle parking facility.

Design Concept and Vision
Led by Rients Dijkstra, PosadMaxwan approached the project with a clear goal: to merge urban functionality with natural elements. For the first time in Zwolle, the greenery of the train station square extends directly into an underground parking garage, offering a continuous flow between outdoor and indoor spaces. Cyclists are guided along gently sloping ramps adorned with seasonal plants, providing a dynamic, nature-inspired journey from the square to the underground parking.

Cyclist Accessibility and Sustainability
Zwolle is renowned for its cycling culture, making cyclist accessibility a top priority. In 2018, the city initiated a redesign of the station square to make commuting by bike as smooth and comfortable as possible. PosadMaxwan’s design integrates daylight, open spaces, and greenery into the underground entrances, creating a safe, welcoming environment for cyclists.
One of the most striking features is a water wall adjacent to the stairs, which demonstrates the city’s innovative rainwater collection system. Rainwater from the square is stored and circulated to irrigate the sloping garden during dry periods, merging sustainability with functional urban design.

Innovative Urban Experience
At PosadMaxwan, the focus is always on rethinking public spaces to enhance city life. The Station Forecourt Zwolle allows urban dwellers to experience nature in their daily routines, even while parking their bicycles underground. The project embodies creative urban design, ecological integration, and functional public space, making it a model for future sustainable transit hubs.
