Street on the River: A Transformative Urban Bridge Design for Copenhagen

In contemporary architecture, infrastructure is no longer limited to function alone. The most innovative examples of urban bridge design redefine mobility corridors as cultural and social spaces. Street on the River, a visionary project by Han Zhang, reimagines the bridge as an extension of Copenhagen’s streetscape, not simply a crossing over water, but a living, flexible public realm.

Rather than acting as a static connector, this project introduces a new typology of movable bridge architecture that integrates transportation, performance, commerce, and leisure into one continuous spatial experience. The bridge becomes a street, a plaza, a theater, and a viewing platform, all at once.

Learning from Copenhagen’s Streets

The core concept behind the project is to “learn from the street.” Copenhagen’s urban fabric is defined by pedestrian vitality, cycling culture, layered public programs, and human-scale architecture. This proposal extends those spatial characteristics onto the river.

Instead of replicating the traditional suspension bridge model, the design continues the rhythm of the city’s streets:

  • Coffee shops and retail spaces activate the edges.
  • Open-air performance areas invite gathering.
  • Bicycle rental and parking integrate sustainable mobility.
  • Public kitchens and service facilities ensure daily usability.

By inheriting the spatial DNA of Copenhagen, the bridge maintains the continuity of urban public space while introducing a bold structural innovation.

A Double-Layered Spatial System

One of the most compelling aspects of this urban bridge design is its layered organization. The bridge separates dynamic and static programs across two levels to prevent conflict between movement and gathering.

Second Floor: Movement and Vision

  • Dedicated cycling and pedestrian lanes, differentiated by color.
  • Bicycle parking and rental services.
  • Unobstructed panoramic views of the river.

Walking and cycling occur on the upper layer, offering the best visual experience and reinforcing Copenhagen’s sustainable transportation culture.

First Floor: Public Programs

  • Open-air theater facing the river.
  • Workshop spaces and storage.
  • Public restrooms and staff facilities.
  • Café and lounge areas.

At the heart of the bridge lies a central theater space that runs through both levels. During certain configurations, it can divide into smaller theaters facing the water, transforming infrastructure into a cultural stage.

Movable Bridge Architecture: Three Modes of Operation

Unlike conventional bridges that interrupt public activity when ships pass, this design introduces six movable floating segments supported by sliding tracks and buoyancy systems. This innovation enables three distinct operational modes:

1. Connection Mode

The bridge functions as a continuous pedestrian and cycling corridor. Urban life flows seamlessly across the river.

2. Open Mode

When ships need passage, the six central segments shift position, forming a widened viewing corridor. Unlike traditional drawbridges, activities on the bridge are not halted. Because the deck remains level, people can watch ships pass at close distance.

3. Festival Mode

During events, the movable segments create irregular spatial formations. The upper passage narrows, encouraging slower movement, while both sides of the river activate as festival grounds. The lower layer disconnects for logistical support.

This flexibility positions the bridge as a permanent public space rather than a temporary transit structure.

Sustainable Transportation Through Design

A key question in modern urban planning is how architecture can encourage sustainable mobility. This project demonstrates that good urban bridge design can foster walking and cycling by making the journey enjoyable rather than merely efficient.

Because sustainable transportation modes are slower and more immersive, the bridge enhances environmental awareness:

  • Direct exposure to wind, light, and water.
  • Continuous visual access to the river.
  • Engaging street-level programming.

When urban movement becomes experiential, citizens naturally gravitate toward walking and cycling.

Structural Innovation and Feasibility

The bridge consists of fixed end segments and six central movable floating parts. The fixed sections contain essential services such as offices, restrooms, and storage. The central segments float on the water and are guided by sliding tracks.

Because the movable sections operate on buoyancy, friction is reduced, allowing a medium-power motor to reposition all six segments efficiently. This combination of traditional beam-column systems and floating mechanics demonstrates how movable bridge architecture can remain both technically feasible and architecturally expressive.

A New Landmark for Copenhagen

In terms of spatial form, the bridge extends Copenhagen’s urban continuity across the river. In cultural terms, it becomes a public activity center with open-air theater and flexible gathering areas. In structural terms, it pioneers a new opening-and-closing system distinct from traditional suspension bridges.

By merging infrastructure with civic life, Street on the River has the potential to become a landmark defined not only by its silhouette, but by its daily use and public identity.

This project by Han Zhang demonstrates how urban bridge design can evolve from a static crossing into a dynamic, adaptive, and culturally embedded piece of architecture, a true street on the water.
