A Harmonious Tropical Haven for Living and Working

Studio F15 by Axial Studio is more than just a home—it’s a modern tropical residence and working studio, designed to blend serenity, functionality, and climate-responsive architecture. Located at the corner of a quiet residential cluster in Tangerang, Indonesia, the 120 m² structure embraces a nature-forward courtyard design, maximizing space, privacy, and daylight.

Positioned at the end of the housing row, the site’s unique layout provided the opportunity to design an inward-looking home with multiple spatial experiences—all centered around a lush inner courtyard.

Design Concept: A Building of Three Functions Around a Courtyard Core

The layout of Studio F15 is anchored by a central open-air courtyard, which not only enhances airflow and daylight but also acts as a buffer zone between private and public spaces. The building is segmented into three main functional zones:

  • Guest Wing (Front Mass): Positioned close to the entrance, this area offers ease of access for visitors without disturbing private zones.
  • Studio/Work Area (Rear Mass): A quiet, focused space separated from the front zone for enhanced productivity.
  • Service & Circulation Core: Located between the two primary volumes, it houses amenities and access paths, seamlessly tying the functions together.

The two main building masses face each other across the courtyard, creating a visual and spatial dialogue, while also encouraging natural light and ventilation.

Courtyard Living: Private, Peaceful, and Green

The inner courtyard is the soul of the house. It functions as:

  • A green buffer for visual and acoustic privacy
  • A space for reflection and relaxation, where residents enjoy koi ponds and surrounding foliage
  • A dining area, perfect for outdoor meals under the tropical sky

The design further capitalizes on its corner site by extending the courtyard laterally, integrating the side garden to enhance spatial generosity and indoor-outdoor connectivity.

Material Palette: Tropical Modernism Rooted in Texture

F15 adopts a modern tropical aesthetic, with a strong focus on material honesty and regional responsiveness:

  • Natural stone, exposed brick, and timber dominate the palette
  • Large openings and sloped rooflines enhance cross ventilation
  • A sloped garden fronting the building offers privacy while softening the building’s street-facing appearance

This combination reflects a deliberate effort to embrace climate-conscious design while delivering a timeless architectural identity.
