Sumthin Else Coffee Shop by Matter of Something: A Bold Fusion of Heritage and Modernity
Sumthin Else Coffee Shop in Bandung blends Dutch colonial heritage with modern-brutalist design, using wood, stone, and stainless steel elegantly.
Located in the historic Jalan Progo neighborhood of Bandung Wetan, Indonesia, Sumthin Else Coffee Shop is a masterful exploration of heritage architecture infused with modern design. Completed in 2024, this 57 m² café by Matter of Something exemplifies how bold contrasts and thoughtful materiality can transform a coffee experience into an immersive journey.

Bridging Past and Present
The design narrative of Sumthin Else seeks to soften the boundaries between past and present through a daring modern-brutalist approach. By carefully blending elements of Dutch colonial architecture with contemporary design, the café preserves its historical integrity while delivering a fresh and vibrant experience. Basalt stone walls were retained in their original positions, respecting the building’s heritage, while continuous wood panels introduce a sense of openness and spatial continuity.
Natural light plays a key role in the interior, streaming through gaps in the wooden ceiling to illuminate the space and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The right side of the building preserves its original structure, allowing the historic narrative to unfold naturally as patrons move through the café. The conserved architrave and nostalgic layout tell the story of the building, ensuring every visit feels meaningful and memorable.

Central Bar and Interactive Layout
At the heart of Sumthin Else is the central bar counter, designed to enhance interaction between baristas and customers. Crafted from curved stainless steel and detailed with green marble and mosaic edges, the bar serves as both a visual centerpiece and a functional hub for coffee enthusiasts.
The material palette embodies a careful interplay of contrasts:
- Wood introduces warmth and natural texture.
- Stone reinforces durability and earthy authenticity.
- Stainless steel delivers a sleek, modern-brutalist touch.
This thoughtful combination creates a dynamic and harmonious environment, reflecting the brand’s identity and commitment to a distinctive coffee experience.

Materiality and Design Details
Sumthin Else showcases collaborations with premium manufacturers, including Carl Hansen and Son, Glassmart, INAX, Omah Bata, Sofia Stone, Taco, and Venus Tiles. Lighting was expertly curated by Hello Good Nite, ensuring that the interplay of natural and artificial illumination enhances the architectural features.
Every element, from the basalt stone walls to the green marble bar accents, contributes to a space that is both visually striking and functionally welcoming. Patrons are invited to linger, connect, and enjoy coffee in an environment that celebrates both heritage and modern design innovation.

A Unique Bandung Coffee Destination
Sumthin Else Coffee Shop is more than just a café, it’s a destination where architecture and coffee converge. The bold yet harmonious design narrative transforms a simple coffee visit into a memorable experience, blending history, material contrasts, and modern aesthetics in a way that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.
