Embracing the Local Surf Culture in Hainan

Earth-Hugging Duke Plaza, designed by Edge Architects in 2024, exemplifies surf community architecture at Riyue Bay’s Tianxin Village in Wanning, China. Commissioned by a long-standing local surf club, this 748 m² commercial complex weaves together recreation, sports, dining, and lodging, reflecting the site’s vibrant surf culture while responding sensitively to its tropical context.

Contextual Form and Material Expression

The building lies parallel to the natural slope, its exposed dark-gray steel frame and translucent polycarbonate facades evoking the image of a sun-tanned surfer poised on a paddleboard. This horizontal stance hugs the terrain, creating a low visual profile that resonates with the surrounding village, sea, and forested hills. The translucent canopies above cast shifting colored patterns, suggesting wind and wave movement during daylight hours.

Spatial Clusters for Dynamic and Tranquil Experiences

Edge Architects organized functions into front and rear clusters to balance public energy with private retreat. The front plaza steps back from the village road, forming an open-air sports zone and welcoming square. A V-shaped incision through the structure channels movement from the bustling piazza into a shaded canopy space, sheltering surfers from intense sunlight while guiding them toward the quieter woodland behind.

Integration of Accommodation and Nature

Guest rooms occupy the rear cluster around a central courtyard, each oriented to frame views of the adjacent woods. A horizontal ribbon window system delivers diffused daylight and sightlines to greenery. Select rooms include overhead skylights, choreographing dramatic light and shadow sequences tied to specific times of day. Eaves galleries and transparent partitions further blur the boundary between interior comfort and outdoor serenity.

Dialogue with the Village and Environment

By minimizing visual mass through transparent cladding and a recessive footprint, Duke Plaza maintains a respectful dialogue with Tianxin Village’s traditional scale. The building’s color palette and materials—dark steel, polycarbonate, and natural timber interiors—harmonize with the bay’s sandy tones and lush hinterland. This architecture champions the surfers’ ethos of unpretentiousness and respect for nature amid rapid, often chaotic, local development.

A New Landmark for Surf Culture

Earth-Hugging Duke Plaza sets a new standard for surf community architecture. It captures the fervor of wave riders, provides functional diversity, and anchors the surf club’s identity in a purpose-built environment that balances dynamic energy with tranquil retreat, all while embracing the natural beauty of Riyue Bay.
