Sustainable Visitor Center Architecture in Brazil: Rede Arquitetos Expands Banco dos Cajuais Center for Aquasis
Rede Arquitetos expands Banco dos Cajuais Visitor Center with sustainable design, enhancing ecological tourism and educational infrastructure in Ceará.
Nestled in the scenic coastal setting of Praia de Picos, Ceará, the expansion of the Banco dos Cajuais Visitor Center by Rede Arquitetos marks a thoughtful response to growing ecological tourism and educational outreach needs. Commissioned by the NGO Aquasis, this project extends the original 2021 center into a more inclusive and environmentally integrated experience, exemplifying sustainable visitor center architecture in Brazil’s northeastern region.




A Purpose-Driven Expansion for Community and Conservation
The original visitor center was conceived as a small exhibition and educational space to support Aquasis’s environmental conservation programs. However, as public engagement grew, so did the demand for a more adaptable infrastructure. In response, Rede Arquitetos developed an expansion plan that would not only increase capacity but also maintain the ecological sensitivity and design coherence of the site.


The newly constructed 55 m² annex sits slightly beyond the original center. This placement respects the existing structures and site dynamics while introducing new programming — most notably a larger gathering space and updated restroom facilities. These additions strengthen the site's functionality without compromising its low-impact design approach.


Architectural Dialogue Through Form and Materiality
The design maintains a direct visual and material connection to the original building. Using similar wall materials and roof geometry, the annex establishes continuity in language while asserting its unique role through broader spans and a more open spatial configuration. A carefully crafted opening in the annex’s front wall frames views of the original center and surrounding green areas, subtly anchoring visitors to the landscape and the site’s mission.




Integrating Landscape and Topography
A key design move lies in how the new building connects to the original. Rather than isolating the structures, the architects extended an existing pathway to guide visitors naturally through the site. This circulation route gently follows the topography and introduces an in-between space — a transition zone that allows each building to operate independently while remaining part of a cohesive architectural ensemble.



Landscape elements and a stone wall discreetly hide pre-existing cisterns, blending infrastructural functionality with organic forms. The pathway not only mediates movement but also defines an experience of approach and reflection, creating moments of pause between built and natural environments.

A Model for Contextual Sustainability
The expansion of the Banco dos Cajuais Visitor Center demonstrates how architecture can grow responsibly without losing its roots. By working with, rather than against, the landscape and climate, Rede Arquitetos showcase the potential of sustainable visitor center architecture to serve both human and ecological needs.



In scale, material, and spirit, this project aligns with the values of Aquasis — enabling education, participation, and environmental stewardship through purposeful and beautiful design. As visitor centers become more critical interfaces between people and protected landscapes, projects like this offer a replicable model of growth that is sensitive, strategic, and sustainable.
