Tartan School, designed by MoDusArchitects, is a thoughtfully conceived extension and renovation of an existing school building on the outskirts of Terlano, nestled in the picturesque Adige Valley between Bolzano and Merano in South Tyrol. Completed in 2023, this project transforms a cumbersome 1990s U-shaped school structure into a modern, flexible, and sustainable educational hub while maintaining strong connections to its surrounding landscape of vineyards, apple orchards, and historic landmarks such as Neuhaus Castle and the town’s traditional church tower.

The project addresses Terlano’s growing educational needs by combining renovation and extension strategies. MoDusArchitects preserved the existing structure while introducing a new wing to house the Kindergarten, creating generous communal spaces shared with the Nursery School and Youth Center. By reducing the number of scattered common areas, the architects established more spacious, multifunctional environments that can also be accessed by the wider community for events, recitals, and meetings.

Architectural Concept and Design

The school’s name, Tartan School, is inspired by the two-tone green tartan pattern applied to the plastered facades of the new addition. This patterning evokes warmth and familiarity, echoing the textiles of everyday life while integrating harmoniously with the surrounding alpine landscape. The trapezoidal volume of the new wing, elevated on angled supports, appears as a distinct neighbor wedged between the original building and the adjacent winery, creating a clear architectural dialogue between old and new.

The extension respects the site’s 4-meter north-south grade change: the Nursery School and Kindergarten enter from the upper ground floor, while the Youth Center remains at the lower ground floor. The lower level communal areas—including a 50-person auditorium, dining hall, and movement/gym room—are directly connected to the outdoor playground, fostering indoor-outdoor interaction and community engagement.

Interior Design and Materiality

MoDusArchitects curated a warm, robust palette for interiors. Brick-red resin flooring complements custom MDF furniture, creating cohesive activity areas for children across all age groups. Built-in reading nooks, activity corners, and wardrobes feature natural tones and materials, while ceiling-mounted acoustic panels with wooden profiles manage sound levels in lively spaces. Large windows punctuate the south-facing facade, inviting abundant daylight while framing views of the surrounding landscape.

Sustainability and Performance

Tartan School is a certified ClimateHouse A building, reflecting MoDusArchitects’ commitment to sustainable architecture. The renovation included upgraded windows, wall, and roof insulation, harmonizing the energy performance of the old and new structures. This ensures thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
