Architectural Vision and Urban Integration

The Teatro Borsoni, designed by Botticini + Facchinelli ARW in collaboration with Brescia Infrastructure, stands as a pivotal element in the urban regeneration of Via Milano, Brescia. As part of the "Oltre la strada" initiative, the theatre transforms an industrial district into a cultural hub, redefining public space and community engagement.

Positioned strategically away from the street line, the theatre introduces a "civic churchyard", featuring granite paving and a tree-lined plaza adjacent to the residential neighborhood. This public space is further characterized by ventilation chimneys and a mirrored plant room volume, seamlessly integrating utility and aesthetics.

Architectural Design: A Modern Cultural Space

Designed as civic architecture, Teatro Borsoni is a parallelepiped structure crafted with large rusticated concrete and aluminum loggia, defining its north-facing facade along Via Milano. The monumental cyclopean wall, constructed using prefabricated concrete blocks (4x1.25m), anchors the theatre’s strong urban presence. A continuous glass wall visually connects the foyer to the plaza, reinforcing the theatre’s openness to the city.

The structure’s fly tower, clad in translucent polycarbonate panels, illuminates at night, creating a striking urban beacon. The theatre serves as an inclusive space, offering multi-functional rooms, communal areas, a bar foyer, and a spacious performance hall, fostering cultural exchange across different age groups.

Interior Design and Spatial Experience

The theatre’s interior material palette combines wood, dark grey plaster, resin floors, and aluminum, producing a contemporary yet warm atmosphere. Acoustic wall panels made of wood ensure optimal sound diffusion, while staircases, railings, and reception counters crafted from aluminum enhance the theatre's modern identity.

A unique "orange path" leads from the foyer to the children’s room, marking a dedicated zone within the theatre. The bar foyer extends into the outdoor plaza, encouraging seamless interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Performance Halls: A Balance of Acoustics and Comfort

Teatro Borsoni houses two performance halls, both accessible from the first floor:

  • The Main Hall accommodates 312 spectators with three aisles—one central and two lateral—connected to emergency exits. LED-lit wooden walls and a thoughtfully designed ceiling enhance acoustic performance. The elevated wooden stage, featuring an underlying hollow space, ensures optimal voice resonance.
  • The Children’s Hall seats 169 spectators and features a wooden floor extending seamlessly to the stage, allowing for flexible, informal seating arrangements. Unlike the main hall, it lacks a fly tower, reinforcing its intimate, community-focused design.
