The Facets Café: A Shimmering Expression of Gem-Inspired Architecture by BBWORKSPACE
The Facets Café redefines architecture with gem-inspired design, merging crystalline light, local craftsmanship, and cultural storytelling in Chiang Mai.
Introduction: Where Architecture Meets Gemstones
Nestled in the culturally rich district of San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai, The Facets Café by BBWORKSPACE is a radiant example of gem-inspired architecture. Designed within the grounds of a renowned gemstone boutique, this project elegantly reinterprets the brilliance and form of precious stones through light, material, and architectural geometry. The 2025 renovation and expansion offer a multi-sensory experience that merges aesthetic storytelling with local craftsmanship, redefining how architecture interacts with light, place, and culture.

A Gem-Inspired Architectural Vision
BBWORKSPACE drew inspiration from the intricate beauty of gemstones such as amethyst, emerald, opal, sapphire, and citrine to shape both the renovated and newly constructed volumes of The Facets Café. The architectural concept embraces gem-inspired architecture by mimicking the facets, transparency, and iridescence of precious stones. Each element—from façade to furniture—channels the visual and emotional quality of gems, turning a simple café into an architectural jewel.

Crystal Clarity: The Renovated Volume
The original building has been transformed into a glowing crystalline mass. Two sizes of clear glass blocks are arranged in alternating layers to form a tactile, gem-like façade. The neutral palette of white, silver, and transparent glass enables the building to illuminate softly from within, especially during the evening, evoking the glow of a gem nestled inside a jeweler’s display case. This interplay of light and texture exemplifies how gem-inspired architecture can imbue functional spaces with elegance and wonder.

Diamond Geometry: The New Addition
The extension, designed as a prism-like volume, references the geometry of a diamond. A steel frame structure is clad in acrylic panels coated with dichroic film, generating dynamic iridescence as sunlight moves across the day. This architectural skin changes color with the viewer’s position and time, reflecting the ever-shifting beauty of natural gemstones. The new volume turns the building into a living sculpture—a luminous form that echoes the ephemeral glow of cut jewels under light.

Interior Design: From Earth to Brilliance
Inside, the café’s interior design narrates the transformation of a gemstone from raw earth to refined brilliance. Wall textures are reminiscent of natural stone caves, carved with geological striations. The predominantly white palette is enhanced with glossy and reflective materials, amplifying the sense of clarity and light. The counter bar, faceted like a gem, is clad in mirrored aluminum and reflects ambient light onto the polished floor below.

Overhead, suspended acrylic panels flutter gently, catching and refracting sunlight. Furniture is sculpted from stone-like forms and adorned with colorful acrylics and laminates that mimic gemstone hues. This combination of raw and refined design elements creates an immersive, gem-inspired environment that feels both organic and surreal.

Landscape Design: Natural Reflection and Cultural Resonance
The surrounding landscape fosters a quiet dialogue between nature and architecture. Curved garden walls made of handmade clay bricks evoke traditional Thai craftsmanship while harmonizing with the café’s contemporary aesthetic. A free-form pond meanders around the outdoor seating area, mirroring the shimmering architecture and contributing to the sense of peace. Carefully selected foliage softens the geometric lines and allows the built environment to breathe alongside the natural world.

A Living Gem of San Kamphaeng
More than a coffee shop, The Facets Café is an architectural expression of gemstone artistry. It captures the essence of gem-inspired architecture by transforming materiality, light, and structure into an emotional journey. Located in the heart of Chiang Mai’s cultural landscape, it serves as a luminous meeting point of heritage and innovation. Through its crystalline forms and iridescent hues, the building becomes a living gem—reflecting light, place, and local identity in one seamless composition.
