The House of Tranquil Rooms – Craft Narrative’s Courtyard Haven in Yavat, India
The House of Tranquil Rooms in Yavat blends traditional courtyard design, nature, and family living, centered around a majestic mango tree.
Designed by Craft Narrative, The House of Tranquil Rooms in Yavat, Maharashtra (India) reinterprets the timeless Indian courtyard house for modern rural living. Spread across 4,500 m², this residence was created for an agricultural family of two brothers, blending tradition, community, and nature into one seamless architectural experience.
At the heart of the home stands an old mango tree, a living anchor around which the design unfolds. The tree is more than just a feature—it symbolizes memory, identity, and continuity. The whitewashed facade reflects simplicity and humility, mirroring the rural context and the client’s wish for a house that accommodates both family needs and the rhythms of nature.

Architecture Rooted in Context
The house embraces the vernacular courtyard typology, fostering interaction while maintaining privacy. Pathways paved with natural stone lead to semi-open verandahs, where sparrows fly overhead and breezes flow freely through the home. The design carefully balances boundaries and openness, blurring the line between built space and landscape.
Inside, spaces are thoughtfully planned to meet different generational needs—reading corners by the windows, yoga spaces overlooking farmlands, and expansive terraces where children roam. Double-height living and dining areas accommodate family gatherings, while more intimate single-height rooms allow for moments of solitude.

Materiality and Cultural Layers
The color palette draws inspiration from local attire—white walls reflect the traditional clothing of men, while vibrant accents celebrate the sarees of women in the household. Decorative elements remain minimal yet rooted in culture: hand-painted bullock cart wheels, tulsi vrindavan, and rustic furniture evoke timeless village life.

A Dialogue with Nature
Every aperture frames a panoramic view of lush farmland, reinforcing the home’s connection to its agrarian setting. The verandah acts as a welcoming threshold, not only for villagers but also for animals, underscoring the inclusive ethos of the design. The mango tree remains the family’s favorite gathering spot—providing shade, fruits, and a symbolic connection to their roots.

Living Tradition, Contemporary Expression
The House of Tranquil Rooms is more than just a dwelling—it is a living narrative of rural Indian life, where architecture celebrates simplicity, sustainability, and harmony with nature. It honors agricultural traditions while offering modern comfort, allowing family rituals, children’s laughter, and daily rhythms to shape the true decor of the home.
