The Inner Journey – A Weekend House in Meherabad by Tres Atelier
The Inner Journey by Tres Atelier is a serene weekend house in Meherabad, blending spiritual retreat, natural materials, and minimalist design.
Nestled in the spiritual land of Meherabad, Ahmednagar, The Inner Journey by Tres Atelier is more than just a weekend retreat – it is an architectural meditation on simplicity, peace, and self-reflection. Designed in 2022 across 1,800 ft², the residence offers a mindful escape for those seeking serenity away from the demands of modern life.

Spiritual Context and Inspiration
Meherabad is closely associated with the legacy of Avatar Meher Baba, making it a destination of spiritual pilgrimage. Drawing inspiration from this heritage, The Inner Journey embraces a design philosophy that encourages self-discovery, silence, and stillness. The house is not simply a shelter—it is a sanctuary that strengthens one’s connection with the inner self while remaining deeply rooted in its natural and cultural surroundings.

Architecture and Design
The house is shaped around an open floor plan with expansive windows that flood interiors with natural light and frame uninterrupted views of Ahmednagar’s vast landscape—ideal for both sunrise contemplation and stargazing at night.
The design uses natural materials—brick, wood, and stone flooring—to add texture, warmth, and authenticity. Every element is pared down to essentials, creating a minimalist interior where clean lines, simple furnishings, and material honesty define the atmosphere. This approach cultivates a sense of calm and balance, allowing residents to focus on their spiritual journey.

The Exposed Brick Corbel Wall – A Landmark Feature
One of the most striking architectural gestures is the exposed brick corbelling wall, considered the highest corbel wall ever constructed without a top load. More than an engineering achievement, it symbolizes strength, resilience, and continuity, echoing the traditions of local architecture and the spiritual depth of Meherabad.

Functional and Symbolic Details
- Floating Plinth: Inspired by the Indian ritual of surrounding offerings (Naivaidya) with water, the house rests on a floating plinth with a perimeter gutter. This prevents reptiles and insects from entering while doubling as a seasonal pond—used for swimming in summer or as a fire-pit zone in winter.
- Butterfly Roof: The dramatic roof design, with a wooden ceiling extending seamlessly from interior to exterior, gives the impression of a house floating in the landscape while embracing the sky.
- Open-to-Sky Toilet: A unique design that enhances the connection between daily rituals and nature.
- Granite Partitions & Vintage Electrical Detailing: Robust granite separates functional spaces, while exposed electrical conduits create a raw, timeless aesthetic.

Living Between Indoors and Outdoors
The house promotes an indoor-outdoor lifestyle, with sliding doors and transparent boundaries that dissolve the distinction between built form and surrounding landscape. Natural stone, wood, glass, and steel integrate modern sophistication with regional authenticity, ensuring harmony with the environment.

A Home for Reflection
Ultimately, The Inner Journey is more than architecture—it is a space of refuge, mindfulness, and healing. By combining exposed brick, natural textures, and thoughtful spatial design, Tres Atelier has created a retreat that transcends the conventional weekend home. It is an invitation to slow down, reconnect with nature, and most importantly, rediscover oneself.
