The Lantern Apartments by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter: A Contemporary Housing Landmark in Norway
Copper-clad residential tower in Norway blends historical context with contemporary design, offering generous apartments, terraces, and strong site-specific identity.
The Lantern Apartments, designed by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, is a contemporary housing project located in Magasinparken, Ski Vest, Norway. Completed in 2022, the project introduces high-quality residential architecture into a newly developed green neighborhood, transforming the site of a former military camp into a carefully integrated urban living environment. With a total area of 4,000 square meters, the development responds directly to its historical context while establishing a distinct architectural identity rooted in materiality, geometry, and landscape awareness.

Architecture Rooted in Place and History
Positioned alongside preserved buildings from the 1890s, The Lantern Apartments demonstrates a contextual architectural approach that balances humility with innovation. Rather than competing with the historical surroundings, the project reinforces the existing character of the area through a conscious use of scale, proportion, and material expression. The building’s compact tower-like form allows it to coexist harmoniously within the park landscape, reinforcing the identity of Magasinparken while contributing a contemporary layer to its architectural narrative.

Copper as a Unifying Architectural Language
A defining feature of the project is its copper-clad façade, which gives the housing complex its distinctive identity. Over time, the copper will naturally patinate, allowing the building to age gracefully and visually integrate further with its surroundings. Linear terraces wrap around the structure, forming a continuous architectural rhythm while offering private outdoor spaces for residents. The terrace railings, crafted from perforated copper plates, introduce a subtle pattern that filters light, enhances privacy, and reinforces the project’s lantern-like appearance, particularly during evening hours.

Spatial Quality and Living Comfort
The Lantern Apartments comprises 38 thoughtfully designed residential units, each benefiting from generous ceiling heights, large window openings, and sheltered private terraces. The dynamic tower geometry ensures optimal daylight penetration and varied spatial experiences across all apartments. These design strategies contribute to a high level of living comfort while maintaining a compact footprint, aligning with contemporary principles of sustainable housing design and efficient land use.

A Green Neighborhood and Sustainable Urban Vision
Embedded within a newly established green neighborhood, the project reflects Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter’s commitment to site-specific architecture and environmentally responsive design. The integration of landscaped surroundings, combined with durable materials and long-lasting construction strategies, supports sustainable urban development in Ski Vest. By reactivating a former military site, the project also represents a meaningful example of adaptive land reuse in Norwegian residential architecture.

Contemporary Nordic Housing with a Timeless Identity
The Lantern Apartments stands as a refined example of Nordic residential architecture, where material honesty, contextual sensitivity, and spatial generosity converge. Through its copper façade, sculptural form, and relationship with the historical landscape, the project successfully bridges past and present, offering a model for future housing developments in Norway and beyond.
