The Lantern House by Oshinowo Studio – A Signature Afrominimalist Oasis on Banana Island, Lagos
The Lantern House by Oshinowo Studio is a 911 m² Afrominimalist Lagos home, blending light, geometry, indoor-outdoor flow, and sustainable design.
The Lantern House, designed by Oshinowo Studio, is a breathtaking residential project situated on the exclusive Banana Island in Lagos. Covering 911 m², this five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home exemplifies Tosin Oshinowo’s signature afrominimalist architecture, blending clean, crisp lines with sophisticated geometric patterns to emphasize depth, texture, and materiality. Carefully crafted light strategies create a warm, inviting glow that enhances both the interior and exterior, making the home a true modern Lagosian sanctuary.

This project marks the practice’s first residence on Banana Island, an artificial enclave renowned for its elite inhabitants, luxurious properties, and advanced infrastructure including water, power, and drainage systems. Sustainability and climate-conscious design were key in the construction, integrating smart home technology, cross-ventilation, local materials, and shade-producing architectural strategies.

Design Concept and Spatial Experience
The client requested a five-bedroom, smart, sustainability-conscious residence featuring two living rooms, a study, a swimming pool, and extensive outdoor entertaining spaces. With a plot facing east, the home is oriented to maximize natural morning light, while high ceilings and tall windows amplify the feeling of spaciousness, airiness, and connectivity throughout.
The open-plan layout on the ground floor enables seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor areas, perfect for Lagos’s tropical climate. Family spaces interconnect naturally, offering both comfort and functional interaction. Vertical zoning ensures privacy for multigenerational living, a nod to traditional Yoruba household culture, while spaces like the 58 m² master suite walk-in wardrobe with skylights provide serene retreats. A double helical staircase elegantly connects all floors, serving as both a sculptural centerpiece and functional circulation element.

Interior Design and Artistic Integration
The interior, curated directly by the client, introduces a maximalist contrast to the minimalist architecture, incorporating bold colors, dynamic patterns, and bronze relief artworks from prominent Nigerian artists. Upper floors feature intimate patios and outdoor connections, extending the seamless indoor-outdoor experience and ensuring natural ventilation and lighting throughout the house.

Exterior and Façade
The Lantern House façade balances solidity and permeability. Solid walls, glass, and patterned steel screens create a striking interplay of transparency and structure. During the day, natural light floods the interiors and accentuates the screen patterns. At night, the home glows outward like a lantern, providing a visual spectacle that resonates with its name.
The project exemplifies modern luxury, climate-sensitive design, and cultural responsiveness, establishing a new benchmark for high-end residential architecture in Lagos.
