The Mad Hatter's Closet
Stuck in the middle of rabbit hole
Wonderland is a strange and curious place where animals act like normal people. Everything seems reversed in this world and is laid out like a huge chessboard.
The Mad Hatter is a unique person in this land, like the name suggests he is insane and a very hyperactive person.
The idea for this project is inspired by Alice in wonderland and many other elements mentions in the book and the movies.
The intent behind the structure of this space was to make it look industrial and connecting with the personality of the mad hatter.
At the start of the process, I tried to create separate shelves that I wanted to be tilted in a way that looked like floating boxes in a space devoid of gravity as in the case when Alice falls from the rabbit hole.
Since the floating shelves did not work I tried to mimic that style by using wireframe-like open structures as closet storage the material and the colors are chosen reflect the personality of the hatter.
The Hatter as a person seems to be very uncoordinated so we can assume that he is a messy being therefore an open closet like this one would make it easier for him to go through without creating chaos. Even if overtime he gets crazy enough to create the mess in the closet the openness of the structure would provide him an easy way out and sort through his belongings. All this will happen without the place looking shabby because of the structure of the space as a whole.
As soon as one enters the closet we see that the whole place gives the feeling of being upside down because of the chessboard-like ceiling and the illusion it creates along with another door that is placed upside down. The storage area of the closet is open and is connected through a wireframe which gives the feeling that it is suspended in the air. The clothes being out in the open seems like good accessibility considering Mad Hatter’s personality. The keyhole-shaped mirror and the watch are some of the most important elements of Mad Hatter’s life in Wonderland.
A separate wall gives space to the Mad Hatter for his hat collection.
