A Modern Courtyard House Amidst Farmlands

Located on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, The Monolithic House by MODO Designs redefines residential architecture through a harmonious blend of open courtyards, minimalist concrete construction, and lush green landscaping. Surrounded by expansive farmlands, this contemporary house responds to its environment by embracing openness, nature, and light.

The client's brief emphasized the desire for a home that seamlessly integrated open spaces inside and greenery outside. In response, the architects envisioned a central courtyard home where open-to-sky spaces fluidly connect the core of the house with its peripheral gardens. At the heart of the home lies a vibrant courtyard, featuring a wooden deck surrounded by plantations and earthy brown Mandana Kapci stone. A remote-controlled fabricated roof covers the courtyard, typically left open during the day to maximize natural ventilation and daylight.

Spatial Organization: Fluid Transitions and Seamless Connectivity

Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed into an intimate vestibule that seamlessly merges into a passageway, guiding them towards various parts of the home. To the left of the vestibule, the pooja room opens into the east-facing garden, creating a sacred connection to nature. Adjacent to the pooja area, the drawing and living rooms unfold, leading into a covered verandah that extends into the eastern garden, blending indoor and outdoor living.

To the right of the vestibule, the kitchen occupies the southeast corner, with an adjoining dining room opening to a small outdoor pocket garden. The staircase to the upper floor rises adjacent to the dining area, providing vertical circulation without disrupting the spatial flow.

The southern wing accommodates private spaces for the elder generations — the grandparents’ bedroom to the southwest and the parents’ bedroom to the southeast, both enjoying serene views of the east garden.

First Floor: Private Sanctuaries and Terraces

The upper floor houses two bedrooms for the homeowners' sons, each spilling out onto private terraces overlooking the east garden. A guest bedroom and a kid’s room are also located on this level, interconnected by a semi-open passage that visually ties back to the central courtyard below. This spatial arrangement ensures that natural light, fresh air, and greenery are integral to every room of the house.

Materiality: Monolithic Aesthetics Rooted in Simplicity

True to its name, The Monolithic House embodies a powerful sense of solidity and permanence. Constructed using a concrete structure, the house features cement-finished walls and Kotah stone flooring, enhancing the minimalist and earthy aesthetic. To balance the rawness of concrete, elements of wood are introduced in the form of wooden ceilings, wall paneling, and reclaimed wood doors and windows, adding warmth and texture to the interiors.

This thoughtful blend of natural materials and minimalist architecture results in a timeless residence that remains deeply connected to its environment, offering a tranquil yet robust living experience.
