The Nest: A Sustainable Vertical Cemetery Redefining Architecture
Transforming Cemeteries with Vertical Architecture—Sustainable, Inclusive, and Designed for the Future of Memorial Spaces.
In contrast to traditional cemeteries, The Nest is a groundbreaking concept that integrates chapels and columbarium within a single vertical architectural gesture. Designed by Chaoran Fa, this innovative project was a shortlisted entry in the Circle of Life competition.

The Nest features Earth Chapels and Gallery spaces at the podium level, while Sky Chapels and Columbarium occupy the upper tower levels. The placement of urns is seamlessly woven into the structure’s canopy, creating a unified space where rituals and ceremonies unfold beneath one roof.
This vertical cemetery explores new urban burial practices, offering an alternative approach to memorializing the deceased while maintaining harmony with public space. Designed with sustainability in mind, the project adopts water cremation—an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional methods. The resulting nutrients from the process contribute to vegetation growth, symbolizing a continuous cycle of life.

With its innovative use of vertical architecture, The Nest challenges conventional notions of cemeteries by merging sacred spaces with urban landscapes. Its inclusive design accommodates diverse rituals, fostering connections between visitors and the memories of their loved ones.
By redefining burial traditions through architectural ingenuity, The Nest stands as a model for sustainable and inclusive memorial spaces of the future.
