The NGÕ Alley House by D.O.G House – A Modern Vietnamese Urban Retreat
The NGÕ Alley House in Hanoi blends traditional tube house design with modern, sustainable features, green spaces, and multi-generational living.
Concept: Embracing Hanoi’s Alley Culture
“The NGÕ Alley House” derives its name from the Vietnamese word “Ngõ”, meaning alley. In Hanoi, alleys are the lifeblood of urban neighborhoods—narrow, elongated spaces connecting multiple households and generations. They symbolize the link between inside and outside, public and private, childhood and adulthood. This archetype inspired the house’s design, which leverages the plot’s naturally narrow, irregular shape while maintaining a harmonious connection to surrounding residences.

Design Impact: Integrating Nature in Urban Living
Amid Hanoi’s rapid urbanization and ecological challenges, The NGÕ prioritizes a living environment that reconnects its residents with nature. Drawing inspiration from the traditional tube house, it features:
- Passive Cooling: Optimized airflow through garden alleys, courtyards, and roof gardens.
- Green Spaces: From alley gardens to rooftop greenery, enhancing natural light, ventilation, and relaxation.
- Thermal Comfort: Roof gardens reduce heat radiation, while locally sourced olive soil mixtures provide insulation and moisture control.
This creates a sanctuary where natural therapy, sunlight, and breezes improve comfort and mental well-being.

Architectural Differentiation: Tradition Meets Modernity
The NGÕ blends Hanoi’s traditional tube house typology with contemporary design:
- Natural Temperature Control: Indoor temperatures maintained around 28°C through garden-ventilation systems.
- Green Therapy: Herbs and spices planted to repel insects and stimulate the senses.
- Minimalist Interiors: Featuring native materials—stone, gravel, wood, and indigenous fabrics.
- Lighting Strategy: Maximizing daylight with reflectors to create soft, dynamic shadows throughout communal and private spaces.
- Spatial Harmony: Curved walls and screens soften the angular boundaries of the narrow plot.

Functionality: Multi-Generational Urban Living
Designed for three generations, The NGÕ organizes living spaces around a central courtyard:
- Private Rooms: Each small family has its own comfortable area.
- Shared Spaces: Kitchen, dining, sauna, worship room, and rooftop for communal activities.
- Urban Play: Rooftop and courtyard provide safe areas for children in dense urban settings.
- Social Connectivity: Courtyard serves as a living garden and informal gathering space, replacing traditional living rooms.

Innovation: Climate-Adapted Indigenous Materials
The NGÕ innovates through the use of local, sustainable materials:
- Olive Soil Mixture: Traditional northern Vietnamese technique that cools in summer, retains warmth in winter, and absorbs humidity.
- Green Alley Circulation: The garden alley acts as a green vein, connecting all parts of the house naturally.
- Urban Retreat: By retreating from the main street, the house creates a serene, green oasis amidst Hanoi’s urban chaos.
This approach reinforces environmental protection while preserving tangible and intangible Vietnamese cultural heritage, offering a modern tube house that harmonizes with both nature and tradition.
