KATATA YOSHIHITO DESIGN, led by Yoshihito Katata, designed the first directly-operated TOJIRO Knife Gallery in the Kansai region, marking a milestone for Tojiro Co., Ltd., the prestigious knife manufacturer from Tsubame City, Niigata. Situated in the bustling Doguya-Suji Yokocho in Namba Sennichimae, Osaka, this compact yet immersive store embodies the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship, precision, and Japanese culinary tradition.

The gallery is thoughtfully designed to offer visitors an experiential journey through the art of knife-making. Divided into two main zones—the knife gallery and the maintenance room—the layout encourages both appreciation and understanding of the craft behind Tojiro knives.

The maintenance room allows customers to witness the knife sharpening and repair process firsthand, using the same machines and materials found in Tojiro’s main factory. This transparent approach mirrors a factory tour experience, emphasizing the meticulous dedication of Japanese craftsmen. By providing an educational and interactive space, the gallery promotes a culture of longevity, sustainable usage, and responsible consumption, reflecting Japan’s philosophy of cherishing everyday tools.

The knife gallery itself highlights the elegance of traditional Japanese aesthetics. Warm wood materials define the space, while knives are displayed alongside cutting boards in a precise, orderly arrangement, emphasizing the balance between functionality and design. The display fixtures incorporate the traditional Yoroi-bari technique, ensuring both safety and ease of handling. This architectural detail is carried seamlessly from the interior to the exterior, creating a cohesive visual identity that resonates with Tojiro’s brand values.

Externally, the facade is clad in galvanized spangle material, evoking an industrial feel reminiscent of a workshop, while integrating harmoniously with the gallery’s traditional wooden elements. This fusion of industrial modernity and Japanese tradition creates a new spatial expression, offering visitors a unique aesthetic experience that bridges cultural heritage with contemporary design.

Through this innovative approach, KATATA YOSHIHITO DESIGN redefines the concept of a retail space, making the TOJIRO Knife Gallery a cultural and community hub for both professionals and enthusiasts. The project demonstrates the potential for cross-cultural spatial design, a concept increasingly relevant across Asia and the global architecture scene.
