Transforming Urban Spaces: Madrid Apartment Renovation Unveils New Skies and Light
This article explores a unique apartment renovation in Madrid, emphasizing natural light and flexible living spaces under a redesigned roof.
Madrid, with its rich history and bustling urban atmosphere, presents unique opportunities and challenges for apartment renovations. In the heart of the city, a remarkable transformation story unfolds on the top floor of an early 20th-century building in the Justicia neighborhood, close to iconic areas like Gran Vía and Chueca. This renovation project, led by gon architects, showcases how thoughtful design can redefine living spaces, emphasizing natural light and open, fluid interiors.

The Challenge: Reviving a Historic Penthouse
The project, known as CIEL, involved renovating a 151 square meter penthouse that lacked significant connections with its surrounding urban landscape. Despite its prime location, the apartment was initially closed off, resembling more the shell of an armadillo than a welcoming home. Its most distinctive feature was an extensive roof made up of undulating and opaque tiles, supported by a framework of aging wooden beams.

Strategic Design: Emphasizing Light and Space
Opening Up to the Sky
The renovation's primary focus was to harness the potential of the expansive rooftop. By reinforcing the structure with metal and creating strategic openings, the project introduced natural light and ventilation that transformed the internal atmosphere. These modifications allowed the residents to experience the changing reflections of daylight, enhancing their daily living environment.

Redefining Interior Spaces
The restructuring under the new roof transformed a compartmentalized layout into a luminous and flowing space. The design cleverly defines areas without rigid separations, allowing for a seamless transition between public and private zones. Changes in flooring materials, from wood to ceramic, subtly demarcate different uses within the apartment, maintaining an open feel while organizing the space efficiently.

Integrating Flexible Domesticity
The redesign considers the dynamic needs of a family, incorporating large, adaptable rooms that cater to both individual activities and collective gatherings. The interior design reflects the family's diverse experiences and travels, with a mix of antique and modern furnishings creating a unique, layered aesthetic. This approach not only enhances functionality but also enriches the aesthetic value of the home.

A Terrace with a View
At the end of the apartment, a 15 square meter terrace offers a direct connection to the outdoors, equipped with a jacuzzi and serving as a vital social space throughout the year. This area provides a private outdoor retreat where the family can enjoy the expansive Madrid skyline and the ever-changing hues above.

A Modern Oasis in Historic Madrid
This Madrid apartment renovation by gon architects exemplifies how urban living spaces can be transformed into personalized sanctuaries that connect residents with the natural and urban landscapes. The project underscores the potential of architectural creativity to adapt and enhance historical properties in city centers, making them suitable for modern urban lifestyles.
